Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Committee Stage (4 Dec 2008)

Rónán Mullen: Perhaps the Minister of State will assist me, and I hope I do not misunderstand things too badly. Removing the exclusion would leave the Bill silent on this issue. How can such silence require all sporting bodies to register? Surely those sporting bodies that wish to avail of certain status would be required to register in that situation. I do not ask the Minister of State to specifically...

Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Committee Stage (4 Dec 2008)

Rónán Mullen: Perhaps the Minister of State would address my specific point. If the Bill is silent and does not specifically exclude sports organisations, surely that would put us in a situation closer to the status quo.

Seanad: Stem-Cell Research (Protection of Human Embryos) Bill 2008: Second Stage (26 Nov 2008)

I am very grateful to them because this is an issue of profound importance. It would be nice to have time to address issues and clarifications...

Seanad: Stem-Cell Research (Protection of Human Embryos) Bill 2008: Second Stage (26 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Devins, for attending the House for this debate. I am delighted to introduce the Stem-Cell Research (Protection of Human Embryos) Bill to the House. The context for the introduction of the Bill is a recent unilateral decision taken by UCC to permit the granting of licences to carry out...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I propose an amendment to the Order of Business, that No. 17 be taken before No.1. The purpose of this is to seek the leave of the House to have my Bill, Stem-Cell Research (Protection of Human Embryos) Bill 2008, introduced and prepared for debate. The Bill's purpose is to prohibit the creation of human embryos for research, to prohibit all research involving or deriving from the...

Rónán Mullen: I move: That leave be given to introduce a Bill entitled Stem-Cell Research (Protection of Human Embryos) Bill 2008.

Seanad: Stem-Cell Research (Protection of Human Embryos) Bill 2008: First Stage. (20 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: Next Wednesday.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: The bells of St. Donie's.

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I ask the Leader to note the very good news today about an article in The Lancet outlining how a woman in Spain has become the first person in the world to be given a laboratory engineered organ. This transplant operation was based on her own stem cells and did not require any immuno-suppressant drugs. The good news, contrary to what some speakers said in this House last week, is that so...

Seanad: Death of Member: Expressions of Sympathy (18 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: Ba bhreá liom, mar ionadaí ó Chontae na Gaillimhe ó dhúchas, cúpla focal a chur leis na focail álainne atá ráite ag mo chomhghleacaithe. Ar an gcéad dul síos, déanaim comhbhrón le muintir Uí Bhraonáin, Ann agus a clann uilig. I am a relatively new addition to this House. I spoke with Séamus Brennan only once but growing up in Galway, he was a very familiar name and face....

Seanad: Rural Development: Statements (11 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: Níl mórán le rá agam seachas gur mhaith liom fáilte a chur roimh an Aire agus a rá freisin go n-aontaím le an-chuid a dúirt mo chomhghleacaí, an Seanadóir Feargal Quinn. Is minic go mbíonn daoine ag gearán faoi dhroch-thionchar na hEorpa nó daoine buartha faoi ghníomhaíochtaí an Aontais Eorpaigh, ach chun an fhírinne a insint——

Seanad: Rural Development: Statements (11 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: ——níl le rá agam anseo inniu ach credit where credit is due, go bhfuil sé go maith dúinn a rá gur dea-scéala atá anseo, amach is amach. Feicim ar an gclár go bhfuil maoiniú de €425 milliún ar fáil, 55% de sin ag teacht ón Aontas Eorpach, agus 45% ón Státchiste, dar ndóigh. Mar atá ráite ag go leor daoine anseo cheana, tá sé seo beagnach trí oiread an méid a bhí...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: ——to replicate the media's total inaction in questioning what UCC has done. There has been no media scrutiny of the lack of public consultation prior to the UCC decision. We do not even know whether they published the results of their own internal survey and nobody is asking the hard questions. I am not aware that anybody has even asked the Government what it thinks of the UCC...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: He will be in Leinster House tomorrow.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: We do not have to——

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I look forward to the support of Deputy Boyle.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I join my colleagues in seeking a debate on education. As somebody who is on the board of trustees of over 100 voluntary schools, I am very concerned about the impact of cutbacks, particularly at second level. Many teachers have contacted me because they are worried about the impact of the budget on substitution and supervision arrangements. We talk about social capital and the importance...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (29 Oct 2008)

Rónán Mullen: No, I am happy the Leader means business.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Oct 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I propose an amendment to the Order of Business to debate the implications of yesterday's remarkable decision by the governing body of University College Cork to approve a protocol allowing human embryonic cell stem research at the university. I am sorry to say that my colleague, Senator Joe O'Toole, could not be more wrong in his analysis of the issue. There is an urgent need for a debate...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Oct 2008)

Rónán Mullen: Exactly. I want to give that reassurance but I cannot do so unless we address this legislative gap. We cannot simply have legislation by university dons. The Oireachtas, under the Constitution, has the right to make laws on behalf of the Irish people and we should exercise that right.
