Written Answers — Department of Defence: Commemorative Medals (17 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: The Department of Defence receives requests from time to time for the replacement of lost, stolen or destroyed medals awarded to Veterans of these conflicts. In relation to such requests, it has been the policy that replacement medals were issued on a once-off only basis on receipt of a bona-fidé request from the Veteran to whom the original medals were awarded. This policy was adopted...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Dec 2023)

Micheál Martin: The Deputy raises a valid and interesting point. I cannot say there are immediate plans to do anything more than what has been done all along. There is a broader issue around the media commission’s report and the funding of public service broadcasting more generally, including the national broadcasts but also public service content on local radio and in print media. Hopefully we can...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Dec 2023)

Micheál Martin: I would appeal to the local authority and its members to work with local residents to get this issue resolved. Very often we have a dilemma here because people decry the taking away of powers from local authorities on an increasing basis. If we centralise everything, I think we will be in difficulty too. I do not know the specifics of the case but it is something that should be resolved...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Dec 2023)

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Dec 2023)

Micheál Martin: I am not aware of that at all.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Dec 2023)

Micheál Martin: Of course. It is the easiest thing in the world to create a rumour and send a hare up the field. We have expanded it; the money is there to do it and we will be doing it. Administratively, if you go from 30,000 to 46,000 or 50,000 clearly there is an impact on the administrators trying to get everything sorted out.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Dec 2023)

Micheál Martin: It is a separate issue. It is not a health employee per se; it is a very important post in the wider community agenda.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Dec 2023)

Micheál Martin: I think they should take a break. They work too hard altogether.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Dec 2023)

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Dec 2023)

Micheál Martin: Ireland is doing everything it possibly can at every forum to intensify the pressure for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. The situation in Gaza is intolerable and unacceptable. Over 18,000 people have been killed and 1.9 million people have been displaced. The death toll is totally shocking. The relentless bombing and slaughter of innocent civilians has to stop. I welcome the UN...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Dec 2023)
