Seanad: Copyright and Related Rights (Amendment) Bill 2007: Committee Stage (Resumed) (3 Oct 2007)

Terry Leyden: Next week. I expect it to be Thursday, 11 October.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2007)

Terry Leyden: I wish to be associated with the best wishes to our Chief Whip, Senator Wilson and to the assistant Chief Whip, Senator Glynn, on their appointment by the Taoiseach. I also congratulate all my colleagues who have been appointed as spokespersons. I wish them well in their responsibilities. We can get down to work in the House now as all the responsibilities have been assigned. I call on the...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2007)

Terry Leyden: I regard the Hanly report as being dead and gone. We binned it a long time ago.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2007)

Terry Leyden: In light of what is happening, we must now ensure a root and branch review of the health services is carried out. Professor Drumm seems to be the Minister as well as the chief executive of the HSE. I would like to see political responsibility for the management of the health service returned to the Oireachtas. Hands off Roscommon's accident and emergency department and hands off Roscommon...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2007)

Terry Leyden: ——all those lives in the past weeks. We have lost Kieran Kelly, Padraic McHugh and Danny Hynes, unfortunately and there have been terrible tragedies in my area in the past week. Three young men have died on the roads of County Roscommon this week and a bus driver died this morning. Without an accident and emergency service in Roscommon hospital, at least three other young men would...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2007)

Terry Leyden: What is more important and valuable than people's health and well being? What is more valuable than one life? What should it cost? I am a former chairman of the Western Health Board and I note that few former executives were laid off when the amalgamation took place.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2007)

Terry Leyden: They are protecting their own jobs; they are not particularly concerned otherwise. They have built an empire for themselves, including Professor Drumm. In the case of a small hospital such as that in Roscommon, which has provided an excellent service for the people of that county——

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2007)

Terry Leyden: ——the people will revolt. We were given commitments by the Taoiseach, the Government and the Minister, Deputy Harney——

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2007)

Terry Leyden: ——and those commitments must be honoured. The present consultation with regard to Portiuncula Hospital will determine whether acute surgery will be discontinued but if it is discontinued, it will mean discontinuing accident and emergency services. I am putting down a marker in that regard, and I ask the Leader to arrange an urgent debate on the health service and on whether Deputy...

Seanad: Voluntary Health Insurance (Amendment) Bill 2007: Second Stage (27 Sep 2007)

Terry Leyden: Is that agreed? Agreed.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2007)

Terry Leyden: It is all joined together.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2007)

Terry Leyden: I join other Members in extending my deepest sympathy to the family of Brian Murray, including his wife Mary, and to the family of Mark O'Shaughnessy. The deaths of these part-time firefighters, who were carrying out their duty on behalf of the State, are a terrible tragedy. We all know such dedicated and hard-working servants of the State. These men sacrificed their lives in their efforts...

Seanad: Copyright and Related Rights (Amendment) Bill 2007: Second Stage. (26 Sep 2007)

Terry Leyden: It is not an allegation. I commend Senator Ross on his writing and if he ever writes a book about the Celtic tiger and its relaunch under this administration, perhaps he could avail of whatever facilities exist. Though we were an enlightened country in terms of introducing that legislation, perhaps we were not so enlightened with regard to this particular concession. It has taken a long...

Seanad: Copyright and Related Rights (Amendment) Bill 2007: Second Stage. (26 Sep 2007)

Terry Leyden: I thank Senator Cassidy for sharing his time. I congratulate the Leas-Chathaoirleach on his unanimous selection and election. His appointment is well deserved. I have experienced Senator Burke's work in the House during the past five years and I am delighted, as a Connaught man, at the appointment of a man from the west. I could criticise the Department and say it was slow in introducing...

Seanad: Copyright and Related Rights (Amendment) Bill 2007: Second Stage. (26 Sep 2007)

Terry Leyden: Why not indeed? The Senator is correct. Mr. O'Brien was a man who never said a good word about Mr. Haughey in his life but he availed of the benefits that accrued from his legislative programme. Mr. O'Brien was not shy about it and why should he be, as Senator Ross has correctly pointed out. Perhaps Senator Ross is availing of some of the concessions himself.

Seanad: Copyright and Related Rights (Amendment) Bill 2007: Second Stage. (26 Sep 2007)

Terry Leyden: It is not an allegation. I said that maybe the Senator was availing of concessions, but he has now confirmed that he is not.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Sep 2007)

Terry Leyden: I support the proposal for a debate on the crisis in Burma. It is vital that the House expresses its views and solidarity with the people of Burma who have been oppressed by the regime for so long. Regarding the near tragedy of the gunning down of Garda Sherlock in Dublin, it is important that people provide information in order that the persons involved can be arrested and brought to trial....

Seanad: Election of Cathaoirleach (13 Sep 2007)

Terry Leyden: I offer Senator Moylan my sincere congratulations on his unanimous election as Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann. It is a great honour for him, his wife, Mary, and his family that he has been selected by the Fianna Fáil Party and unanimously supported by all parties in the House. It is a great personal tribute to his work in the House over the past ten years, as well as his work as Fianna...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Jul 2007)

Terry Leyden: Our Taoiseach, given his relationship with Tony Blair and as the longest serving Head of State in the European Union, could play a pivotal role in this regard, particularly given the outstanding record of both men in Northern Ireland. They have great ability and I urge the Taoiseach, although urging him is unnecessary, to play that role. I wish to put on record my thanks to the Cathaoirleach...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Jul 2007)

Terry Leyden: The way the Leader summarised the work or contributions of Senators was also worthwhile. We are well served by the Clerk and Clerk Assistant of the Seanad. They are experienced and powerful women who guide the Seanad. The stenographers and technical back-up to the House are second to none. The reports published of the contributions made in the House are exemplary. I do not know how they...
