David Norris: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (16 Jul 2015)
David Norris: There is usually an Order of Business, and for the Cathaoirleach to cancel it peremptorily is very unusual and an affront to democracy.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (16 Jul 2015)
David Norris: It did not expire.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (16 Jul 2015)
David Norris: It was the time the Cathaoirleach set for a sos that caused it to expire.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (16 Jul 2015)
David Norris: Can we have the Leader’s response to the Order of Business, please? It is a matter of the ordinary process of the business of the House.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (16 Jul 2015)
David Norris: The Leader’s response does not eat into the time for the Order of Business. We demand the Leader’s response to the truncated Order of Business. Can we have that, please?
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (16 Jul 2015)
David Norris: It really is outrageous to have an Order of Business and for the Cathaoirleach not to permit the Leader to reply. That is an abuse of democracy. I am asking the Cathaoirleach to use his experience and wisdom to permit the Leader to reply.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (16 Jul 2015)
David Norris: That does not matter. The Leader should reply. The Cathaoirleach is censoring the Leader of the House. That is a very dangerous thing to do.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (16 Jul 2015)
David Norris: It is a disgrace.
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Jul 2015)
David Norris: I second Senator O'Brien's proposed amendment. I also share the concern expressed about the Houses of the Oireachtas (Appointments to Certain Offices) Bill. It is inappropriate for it to be shoved through, even though it is a short Bill. There should be time for reflection and amendments, particularly amendments on Report Stage. What most concerns me about the Bill is the attempt to set...
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (15 Jul 2015)
David Norris: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (15 Jul 2015)
David Norris: I welcome the Minister of State, who is a decent man. His heart and intellect are in the right place. The Minister of State indicated that the Bill shows the relevance and value of Seanad Éireann. Many of the amendments accepted and introduced by the Dáil were argued for passionately in this House, and it is a great relief to see them included as a result of action in the...
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (15 Jul 2015)
David Norris: So often we hear people giving out yards about the legal profession. I know of no finer practitioner than Michael Farrell. Over many years, as a serial litigant, I have benefited from the advice and help, very often on apro bonobasis, of the legal profession. A meeting was organised by Senator Bacik in Trinity College a few days ago and Senator Zappone's partner, or spouse, Ann Louise...
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (15 Jul 2015)
David Norris: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (15 Jul 2015)
David Norris: I agree completely with people's right to go to court but vexatious cases should be dealt with summarily. The High Court indicated that there was no basis for the case.
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (15 Jul 2015)
David Norris: I was very reassured that I was in Senator Mooney's thoughts.
- Seanad: Seanad Public Consultation Committee Report on Farm Safety: Motion (15 Jul 2015)
David Norris: I will not need the eight minutes; I will be fairly brief. I welcome this clear, factual and comprehensive report. It shows the value of Seanad Éireann and also of the Seanad Public Consultations Committee. I compliment Senator O'Donovan on this initiative and also Senator Martin Conway, who I believe was also very much behind this proposal. They took evidence, reviewed statistics...
- Seanad: Seanad Public Consultation Committee Report on Farm Safety: Motion (15 Jul 2015)
David Norris: I beg Senator Landy's pardon. There were many times when Laois were there, and they did extremely well, except for the foul-mouthed response of two Laois people sitting behind me on one occasion. I was absolutely horrified. There was a Northern family sitting in front of me and I thought, "Oh my God", so I told them that I was from Laois as well but that I was not like the two behind me....
