- Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (23 Mar 2021)
Colm Burke: It is important when writing to the Department about legislation for the use of CCTV that we also seek a timeframe. There is no point in saying we want the Department to bring forward legislation. We should seek for it to confirm to us when it will bring forward the draft legislation rather than writing the same letter again this time next year.

Colm Burke: Absolutely. I thank the Chairman.
- Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (23 Mar 2021)
Colm Burke: I agree with my colleagues on this matter. The SBCI letter now seems to dispute some of the issues raised. I would like to see the evidence of this because the evidence we had does not appear to agree with some of the issues raised in the letter. It is important that we get the SBCI representatives to check back in and go through this again. We need to see what explanations are being...
- Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (23 Mar 2021)
Colm Burke: I think it would be helpful if we did get written answers because at least then we can scrutinise those answers. I really think it would be helpful if we got them in before the SBCI representatives came back in. That is my personal view.
- Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (23 Mar 2021)
Colm Burke: It would be important we have replies in well before that date.
- Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (23 Mar 2021)
Colm Burke: I cannot comment on the issue in relation to Listowel but in relation to Cork city there is a problem in that we are running centres in two locations in the city whereas there is a strong view that one location in the city centre would be more effective. The question is whether or not work should be done by the HSE with SouthDoc to aim towards that. The current situation is that the...
- Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (23 Mar 2021)
Colm Burke: My understanding is the problem is getting staff to man the centre to keep the level of service. It still raises the question of whether there could be a far more efficient service by having one location in the centre of the city, rather than the way it is now organised. I do not know why that was not done the first day but it is a problem now because even people on the south side cannot...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Regulation of Nursing Homes and Development of a New Model of Care for Older People: Discussion (23 Mar 2021)
Colm Burke: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. I will open with the issue of bringing public nursing homes up to standard, particularly now because of Covid and the challenges that it has posed. I understand that 122 HSE public nursing homes were required to meet a certain standard by 2015 and that an extension was granted for six years, bringing the deadline to December 2021. What is the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Regulation of Nursing Homes and Development of a New Model of Care for Older People: Discussion (23 Mar 2021)
Colm Burke: It would be helpful if we could have the exact figures for what is expected to be completed by December 2021 and if we knew how it is proposed to deal with people. According to the last set of figures I have seen, there are more than 5,500 people in public nursing homes. I am not sure how many are affected by not having a suitable physical environment for long-stay individuals. Maybe we...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Regulation of Nursing Homes and Development of a New Model of Care for Older People: Discussion (23 Mar 2021)
Colm Burke: In December 2020 and January 2021, there were outbreaks in a large number of nursing homes. What level of engagement was there in that period? It is extremely important to address this. We could have a new challenge next week and it would be a case of how fast we could get the information out to the providers.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Regulation of Nursing Homes and Development of a New Model of Care for Older People: Discussion (23 Mar 2021)
Colm Burke: On the Department and the proposed licensing concerning home care provision, at what stage are we? I introduced a Private Members' Bill on introducing a regulatory framework for home care. At what stage is the Department on drafting legislation? When are we likely to see draft legislation? What is the timeframe for introducing it and putting it into law if we want to introduce a licensing...
