Seanad: Local Government Funding: Statements (5 Dec 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: It is high time town councils are returned to certain parts of our country, where applicable. We are trying to encourage more people to enter politics and town councils were the first step for many. That step has now been removed and it makes it more difficult for people to enter local government.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Universities Act 1997 (Section 54(3)) (University Authorisation) Order 2019: Motion (5 Dec 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I concur with much of what Deputy Byrne said on this. It is an very historic and important day and, as the Minister of State said, this accolade is not easily handed out and a great deal of thought and consideration was given to it. I congratulate all associated with the RCSI on the work that has gone into this, to bring us to where we are today. I compliment them on that, and I am happy...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects Status (3 Dec 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: Ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur roimh an Aire Stáit go dtí an Teach seo inniu. The Minister of State is welcome to the House. I thank him for taking time to be here. Ballybay community college applied for an extension to its school facilities in 2015. The extension incorporated two classrooms, a science room and a science preparation area. The school has been waiting...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects Status (3 Dec 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Aire Stáit. That is, indeed, good news and I thank him most sincerely for relaying it to us. I take this opportunity to thank the school's board of management, the parents' association and the CMETB for their work in bringing this project this far. I also thank the Department for finally giving us the go-ahead to move on to the next stage. This is a...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Dec 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: In September I raised in the House the plight of the community of Magheracloone, County Monaghan

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Dec 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: Magheracloone.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Dec 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I thank Senator Nash. Part of a mine collapsed in the area, resulting in major subsidence. The result was that many families had to leave their homes. The local community centre and GAA pitches were left completely out of bounds. As one can imagine, it was a major blow to the community in County Monaghan, and particularly for the people of Magheracloone. The local GAA club, Magheracloone...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I also support Senator Leyden's amendment to the Order of Business. Following on from Senator Bacik's comments, I welcome the fact that there appears to have been a breakthrough of sorts in the farming dispute. What I find particularly frustrating - and I am sure many farmers do as well - is that it seems to take farmers leaving their lands with their tractors to drive up to the gates of...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: More is the pity.

Seanad: Imminent Closure of Cuisle Accessible Holiday Resort: Statements (27 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I welcome the Minister of State back to the Chamber this afternoon. I concur with everything Senator Leyden has said and I compliment him on proposing during the Order of Business this morning that the Minister of State attend the House to discuss the issue. I will not be repetitive. I live in the Cavan-Monaghan constituency. Many people from that part of the world use the Cuisle...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Retention of Records Bill 2019: Discussion (26 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I thank all of the witnesses for taking time out to attend this morning to share their stories, particularly the survivors. It is an honour and privilege to hear their testimony and I thank them for giving it to us. I am sure it is very painful having to go through all this again. I thank them most sincerely for their contributions. On a more general point, it is past time that the State...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Retention of Records Bill 2019: Discussion (26 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: Maybe Ms Crowe and Dr. O'Rourke could state the motivation behind this Bill.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Refurbishment (21 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I welcome the Minister of State to the House this morning and I thank him for taking the time to be here. St. Aidan's comprehensive school, Cootehill, is a stand-alone, post-primary school built in 1996. That school has had no refurbishment to the fabric of the building since that date, apart from some works that were done on foot of a health and safety audit, when some works were done as a...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Refurbishment (21 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I thank the Minister of State for his response and I would be grateful if he corresponded with the Minister on this issue. As the Minister of State can see from my presentation, there has been little or no investment in the school since it was constructed in 1998. Therefore, it is past time that the school was considered for funding. I request that serious consideration is given to the...

Seanad: Regulated Professions (Health and Social Care) (Amendment) Bill 2019: Second Stage (21 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I welcome the Minister of State. Fianna Fáil will support the Bill. It seeks to offer patients reassurance by allowing public access to all sanctions handed down to medical practitioners. This is to ensure the public has access to information about disciplinary sanctions that have been imposed on doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists and other regulated health professionals. The...

Seanad: Inquiry into the Death of Shane O'Farrell: Statements (20 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I welcome the Minister back to the House this afternoon to discuss the tragic and evolving story of the death of Shane O'Farrell who, as we all know, died as a result of a road traffic accident in County Monaghan in August 2011. He was killed in a hit-and-run by a man who had 42 previous convictions. The driver of the car was on bail in respect of several offences. He had breached the...

Seanad: Inquiry into the Death of Shane O'Farrell: Statements (20 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I do, however, take on board the presentation of the Minister at the outset of the debate. Fianna Fáil brought forward the motion calling on the Minister to adopt the terms of reference as drafted by Judge Haughton. As the Minister knows, terms of reference are clearly binding on an inquiry. They establish the jurisdiction of that inquiry in setting out what it can and cannot inquire...

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Rehabilitative Periods) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (20 Nov 2019)

Robbie Gallagher: I will be brief. I welcome the Minister to the Chamber. On behalf of the Fianna Fáil Party, Senator Wilson and I are delighted to support this legislation. I compliment Senators Ruane, Kelleher and Black on their work. It is worthwhile legislation. We in Fianna Fáil introduced something similar in 2007 and 2011. We are delighted to support the Senators' Bill and to hear the...
