- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Tendering of Bus Services: National Transport Authority (22 Jan 2014)
Noel Harrington: I have a brief question and it would be great if Mr. Murphy has the figures in this respect. If he does not he might forward them. He mentioned that as routes have ceased they have been retendered. How many times has the authority had to retender routes during the past three years?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Tendering of Bus Services: National Transport Authority (22 Jan 2014)
Noel Harrington: I presume it was awarded the contracts because it could deliver the services more efficiently, whether in terms of a lower cost or providing better value for money.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Tendering of Bus Services: National Transport Authority (22 Jan 2014)
Noel Harrington: At the last meeting Deputy Dooley introduced an ideological argument. It would be preposterous to suggest the National Transport Authority, NTA, was embarking on a mission of privatisation. It was the NTA that offered those contracts to provide for efficiencies, not some political or ideological decision.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Tendering of Bus Services: National Transport Authority (22 Jan 2014)
Noel Harrington: I wish to follow on from Deputy Maloney's point about declaring an interest. I am of the opposite view. It is very difficult for me to access public transport given where I live. I commend the NTA on its route planner app – the national journey planner. If I were to come from home this morning to work I had three options. One was to leave on Monday afternoon. The other was to...

Vote 29 - Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (Revised) (21 Jan 2014) Noel Harrington: I have raised with the Minister of State on several occasions the question of whether provision could be made for the reinstatement of a lake in west Cork. It is only a minor issue but one that is causing a great deal of heartache for some people.

- Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 29 - Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (Revised) (21 Jan 2014) Noel Harrington: I would like to make an observation in that context. Perhaps the time is coming when there will be an engagement between the Departments of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. I am aware of business parks in more remote areas that have broadband but it is not adequate to enable them to compete. Second level schools have been quite well served...
- Recent Severe Storm Damage: Statements (16 Jan 2014)
Noel Harrington: The brunt of the recent storm was experienced first on the south-west and west coasts. West Cork was probably one of the first areas to feel the impact of the tempest and it did not get away lightly in the context of the damage that was done. The damage resulted from a powerful combination of strong winds and particularly high tides and tidal surges. These coincided with what might be...

- Betting (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (15 Jan 2014)
Noel Harrington: I welcome the Bill and welcome the opportunity to contribute to the discussion. My first point is that the betting and gaming industry is big business, and one that has changed fundamentally. To give an example, the small town in which I live in west Cork had no bookie's shop for some 80 years. In the last decade, a bookie's shop opened and created two jobs, and many things changed...
