- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: It is just a question.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: It is just a general question. I am sure the witnesses would be happy to answer whether or not pilots have confidence in the IAA.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: I only ask on the basis of some of the correspondence-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: -----that we received that would suggest that they do not. The IAA was criticised by air traffic controllers. I believe a Dutch company, KRO, recorded the documentary saying that the IAA was criticised by air traffic controllers and others for prematurely issuing a response which essentially found no wrongdoing on a particular airline's part with regard to safety concerns. This...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: I thank Ms Mannion. I know that Friday meeting was arranged in advance. That Friday was the day the CAA gave a deadline of 5 p.m. for, so it was the day that Ryanair was compelled to either act by or to go to court. The Commissioner's office should remember that it exists to protect passengers' rights. It is not a matter of whether criticism is taken personally. It is not meant to be...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: On that point, one of the major obstacles was the fact that Ryanair withheld all of the information in respect of alternative rerouting that was available for passengers and it did not do that for a full fortnight afterwards. Ryanair did that on Friday, 29 September, a full fortnight afterwards. That was one of the major issues. Despite the office being in contact with it, it still took...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: It took 14 days going the other way too. It was clear for everyone to see that the response from Ryanair to the Civil Aviation Authority, CAA, in the UK was almost instant. It took Ryanair to task and Ryanair knew straight away that it would be taken to court if it was not forthcoming with the information by a particular day. There was a particular timeline.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: I am not speaking about the commission's meeting on 29 September. As Ms Mannion said, that was pre-arranged. However, the CAA had given Ryanair a particular deadline and time to adhere to what it was asking of it, which was to be more forthright with all of the information to which passengers are entitled, and Ryanair responded to that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: Ryanair had them with us. It had responded on the same day that the CAA had-----

Imelda Munster: Does the Irish Aviation Authority respond to the detail in the report-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: -----or is it a standard response? Is that every report? Could the witness stand over that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: I am not talking about just the mandatory reports. I am talking about-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: Is Mr. O'Connor confident in that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: I have one other question which relates to the documentary-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ryanair Service Provision: Commissioner for Aviation Regulation and Irish Aviation Authority (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: It is a detailed documentary. I am surprised that Mr. O'Connor is not aware of it. Perhaps we could send it on to him.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Working Hours of Pilots and Pilot Welfare: Irish Air Line Pilots Association (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: I raised that particular issue with the IAA an hour ago. I asked particularly about complaints and how they are dealt with. I cannot remember the initial response, but I then asked whether the IAA responds to the complaints. I was told that the IAA does not respond but rather reacts to the complaints. I said that react is different from respond and asked if the IAA respond to all complaints.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Working Hours of Pilots and Pilot Welfare: Irish Air Line Pilots Association (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: The witness said "yes", but clearly we are now hearing something completely different. It was said:Sometimes issues raised in such reports are added to the list of matters we check during inspections and audits. We do not report to the individual reporter on the outcome of investigations, although we may interview him or her to obtain further information. That contradicts the response...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Working Hours of Pilots and Pilot Welfare: Irish Air Line Pilots Association (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: I emailed you because when I saw the agenda I thought the running order was incorrect.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Working Hours of Pilots and Pilot Welfare: Irish Air Line Pilots Association (4 Oct 2017)
Imelda Munster: I know. You do not need to be so defensive as I am not referring to you at all. I am saying I felt the running order was incorrect, that it would have been better to have had the pilots in first and then the Irish Aviation Authority. Even if we proceed today, representatives of the IAA have gone; therefore, we cannot take the authority to task on the issues raised. If you are suggesting...
