- Seanad: Civil Registration (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (15 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Minister as Tánaiste. This is my first opportunity to do so and I welcome her appointment. I also welcome the Bill and I thank the Minister for starting it in the Seanad. It is a Bill that will benefit from the detailed scrutiny we will give it in the Seanad on Committee Stage. We always appreciate when Ministers initiate Bills in the Seanad. The Bill is about...

Ivana Bacik: Now.
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: I join Senator Darragh O'Brien in congratulating the new Ministers of State, although I understand they have not yet been formally appointed, and offering my commiseration to those who have lost office. I agree with Senator O'Brien regarding the ordering of business in the House this month. As all colleagues know, it is not a unique feature of this Government. In fact, it has been a...
- Seanad: Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Bill 2014: Report and Final Stages (10 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: I thank the Minister for her engagement on this Bill. I reiterate the point made by Senators Zappone and van Turnhout. I is always a proud moment when a Senator has an amendment accepted. I have had this experience on a small number of occasions. It is a measure of a good and engaged Minister that she was willing to take amendments, reconstruct them and incorporate the principles involved...
- Seanad: Environmental Protection Agency: Motion (9 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I am pleased to have an opportunity to speak on these important environmental matters. I commend my colleagues, Senators Whelan and Landy, for putting forward this motion with the support of all of us in the Labour Party group. I thank the Minister, Deputy Hogan, for the speech he made earlier, which was a comprehensive response to the issues...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: I echo Senator Darragh O'Brien's comments of concern and disappointment at the cancellation of the five concerts. It is not fair or appropriate to blame one official.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: Permission was granted for three concerts.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: Apparently, the decision was taken by the artist and promoter. I am aware another promoter went on radio this morning to express his view which was somewhat critical of the way it was done. We need to look at how we ensure change to ensure it does not happen again. As legislators we have allowed a practice to grow up where concert tickets were being sold in thousands, subject to licence....
- Seanad: Competition and Consumer Protection Bill 2014: Second Stage (8 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: Next Thursday.
- Seanad: Competition and Consumer Protection Bill 2014: Second Stage (8 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: The Minister is very welcome to the House. Like my colleagues on this side of the House, I very much welcome the Bill. In fact, I believe colleagues on both sides will welcome it. It is a sensible Bill. As the Minister said, it has three main purposes. The first of those is the one on which there has been a focus, that is, merging the National Consumer Agency and the Competition...

- Seanad: Regulation (EU) No. 603/2013 on the Establishment of Eurodac: Motion (3 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: I thank the Minister for facilitating us in the Seanad by agreeing to take this debate on conclusion of Committee Stage of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Bill 2014. As Deputy Leader, I was happy to accede to the request from Senator Ó Clochartaigh on the basis that I think it is a good idea that we would have a debate on motions that come to us from the Oireachtas Joint...
- Seanad: Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: On Tuesday next.
- Seanad: Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: I have spoken with Senator Katherine Zappone and the Minister about this issue. We must encourage greater co-operation between Oireachtas joint committees and the new institution, but I am not sure if the best way to do it is through legislation. We have had that debate and I look forward to the Minister's response. In spirit, we agree with the principle that there be co-operation....
- Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: I was one of the speakers who participated in the debate with the Minister, Deputy Joan Burton, during which I called on her to ensure better and improved levels of child care as a quid pro quofor the changes in the system. All of us appreciate that the motive behind the change is to ensure greater entry opportunities to the labour market for lone parents.
- Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: I met the members of SPARK at the time, but I will certainly seek another debate on the issue. Senator John Kelly raised the issue of delays in respect of visa applications and called for a debate on the matter. The Senator spoke eloquently about how frustrating this is. I ask him to table it as a matter on the Adjournment to the Minister for Justice and Equality, as that mechanism would...
- Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2014)
Ivana Bacik: I have already asked for that debate. Senator James Heffernan paid tribute to the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy Ruairí Quinn, and his commitment to the school building programme. The Senator is correct in stating that the Minister had an immense commitment to the school building programme, and we have seen enormous improvements in the physical infrastructure of schools...
