- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: General Scheme of the Monuments and Archaeological Heritage Bill: Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (3 Feb 2022)
Steven Matthews: We are almost out of time but I have some questions about the heads of the Bill. They relate to something Deputy Ó Snodaigh asked earlier. Many monuments have no signage and we do not know where they are. In a way, that offers them some protection until something goes wrong. We do not attract heavy footfall to them, we do not need landscape management plans and there is no great...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: General Scheme of the Monuments and Archaeological Heritage Bill: Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (3 Feb 2022)
Steven Matthews: That leads on to another question. I thought we would wind up. I notice that where a monument is on private land, the landowner has an option to ask the Minister to take it into guardianship or ownership. Does that convey any rights to people to come and visit where the Minister then has responsibility for the monument? Does that change the position as regards access?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: General Scheme of the Monuments and Archaeological Heritage Bill: Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (3 Feb 2022)

Steven Matthews: I thank our guests for this interesting and helpful engagement. We will have a meeting with the OPW and the Irish Planning Institute next week or the week after that to discuss planning matters. We have sought the views of the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine as well because many of these monuments will be on farmland. Farmers are probably the biggest cohort of...

- National Broadband Plan: Statements (27 Jan 2022)
Steven Matthews: Much has been said. What is important to point out is that it is a massive €2.1 billion project, but what it delivers will be massive in terms of opportunity throughout the country. We have often had an urban-rural divide in much of our infrastructure. What we are doing here is bringing equity to communications and fantastic opportunities to every rural home, business and school....
