Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: It went elsewhere.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: Senator Hayes asked for a short debate on the Abbeylara inquiry, a question which the Cathaoirleach answered. Senators Hayes, Higgins and others were involved in the inquiry but, as the Chair explained, it is a procedural matter. Senator Hayes also raised the question of Shanganagh prison and asked if I would convey to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the concerns of the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: I rather doubt it. Issues are raised in the press as though they are new although they certainly are not. The Seanad is listened to and reported by at least one member of the press corps. Senator Ryan asked about flood relief. This matter was raised about six years ago by Senator Ulick Burke when money was granted for relief in south Galway.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: Senator Burke also asked for a debate on the Garda annual report for 2001. Such a debate would be timely. We were all shocked by the percentage increases in the various crime areas. Senator Burke raised the issue of compensation to survivors of child abuse. I do not know where the figure of €10,000 originated.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: We must seek clarification on that matter. I never heard that figure mentioned. Senator Mansergh raised the matter of inequality in Portmarnock Golf Club and remarked that justice is not just for small people but for larger entities well. We should call such people bad shots rather than big shots. I cannot understand how a golf club would not admit women members. It beggars belief.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: The men on my side of the House agree with me. Senator Henry, who is a patron of the Penal Reform Trust, also raised the question of visits to prisons by Amnesty International. Senator Henry spoke about the quantification of the benefits of prison and called for a debate on the Prison Service. I will ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to come to the House again for a debate...

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: We will have to bring him in for that alone. Senator Terry also raised the issue of Shanganagh and some remark she heard the Minister saying, which I did not hear, on the "Pat Kenny Show". Senator Browne asked if it were proper that the Secretary General of the Department of Transport is investigating her own Minister. However, there are two investigations. One concerns Aer Rianta and the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: I strongly believe that. Again, was it not a very male issue in that it related to brandy and cigars? There was not white or red wine, just brandy and cigars. I am sure that the report on the matter will be quite explicit and straightforward, and we will all be satisfied with it. Senator Bannon raised the issue of Abbeylara. Obviously he has an interest in that. Also, he asked why the rural...

Seanad: Sub-Committee on the Abbeylara Incident: Motion. (27 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: I move: That, whereas the Tribunal of Inquiry into the facts and circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of John Carthy at Abbeylara, County Longford, on 20th April 2000 and related matters has requested the Clerk of the Seanad to release to it all documentation in her possession arising out of the work of the Sub-Committee on the Abbeylara Incident (being a Sub-Committee of the Joint...

Seanad: National Tourism Development Authority Bill, 2002: Order for Second Stage. (27 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: I move: "That Second Stage be taken today." Question put and agreed to.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: The Order of Business today is No. 1, motion referring the subject matter of No. 6 on today's Order Paper to the Joint Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women's Rights, and providing for the joint committee to report back by 28 November 2002; No. 2, Fisheries (Amendment) Bill, 2002 – Order for Second Stage and Second Stage with the contributions of spokespersons not to exceed 15...

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: I think it is next Tuesday.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: The spatial plan.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: The shop steward.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: Senator Finucane referred to the postal dispute and today's vote. I agree that the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources should come to the House to discuss the matter. Senator Leyden also referred to this matter and, leaving aside the issue of Christmas cards, there is huge disruption to postal deliveries, particularly in rural Ireland. It is often the case that something...

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: The report has not been issued. As soon as it is published, we will have a debate on it. Senator Bannon raised the issue of water supply. While there was confirmation of excess uranium in the water supply in Wicklow, the other counties to which he referred are being investigated and have not yet been confirmed as having an excess of uranium or other harmful contents in their water supplies....

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Nov 2002)

Mary O'Rourke: No, it was because I forgot about it. I apologise for it. Like Senator Higgins, Senator Burke raised the issue of the refusal of Amnesty International's request to investigate racism in our prisons. We must have that clarified. Senator Burke asked for a debate on the Border, midlands and western region, a point also made by Senator Dooley who appeared to indicate that he had important news in...
