Mary Butler: “As this Parliamentary Question relates to an operational issue, it is a matter for the HSE. National Maternity Hospital: Motion [Private Members] (23 Jun 2021)

Mary Butler: I thank the Deputies for tabling this motion. The contributions that Deputies have brought to this topic are testament to how critically important the new national maternity hospital is. When I spoke on the topic of maternity services recently, I noted how the attention and investment in those services are commensurate with the importance that we, as a society, place on women and babies. I...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Dental Services (23 Jun 2021)

Mary Butler: To answer the second query the Deputy raised, that is ongoing and something of which I am very much aware. As I said, the Minister, Deputy Donnelly, met the Irish Dental Association last November, he spoke at its conference last month and is acutely aware of the challenges. We have discussed it. The reason some dentists say they are leaving the scheme is that they have been seeking a...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Dental Services (23 Jun 2021)

Mary Butler: I thank the Deputy very much for raising this very important issue. I welcome the opportunity to address the issue of the current difficulties in the dental treatment services scheme. The DTSS provides dental care, free of charge, to people with medical cards aged 16 years and over. These services are provided by independent dental practitioners who have a contract with the HSE. Patients...

Mary Butler: The Government, and all relevant State organisations including those in the health sector, have acknowledged the impacts posed by Covid and have made unprecedented and comprehensive efforts to mitigate them. A key focus for Government has been addressing the impacts on the mental health of all our population, including young people. The Government’s strong commitment to mental health...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Care of the Elderly (23 Jun 2021)

Mary Butler: In June 2020, the Programme for Government, mindful of the particular impact of COVID-19 on older people, especially those who live on their own and people living in nursing homes, set out a commitment to establish a commission to examine care and supports for older people. In August 2020, the COVID-19 Nursing Homes Expert Panel, established by Minister Donnelly and I, on foot of a...

Mary Butler: The Nursing Homes Support Scheme, commonly referred to as the Fair Deal Scheme, has been in operation for over 10 years and there is broad agreement that the Scheme operates well and continues to provide appropriate financial assistance where it is required. However, it is recognised that the Act, in its current form, does not place caps on the financial assessment of family owned and...

Mental Health During and Post Covid-19: Statements (3 Jun 2021)

Mary Butler: I thank Members for the opportunity to update the House further on mental health services during and post-Covid-19. At the outset, it is important to acknowledge that although we are, hopefully, past the worst of the pandemic, we are not out of the woods yet. When we talk about mental health post-Covid-19, therefore, we should acknowledge that the impact of Covid-19 will be felt for some...

Maternity Services: Motion [Private Members] (2 Jun 2021)

Mary Butler: In closing, I again thank Deputy Connolly and her colleagues for tabling the motion. The quality of our maternity services is, for me, a reflection of the importance we place on women and their infant babies. It is not that long ago that such esteem was not clearly visible, something this House and the country as a whole should not easily forget. As an Irish woman and a mother, I am well...

Covid-19 Vaccine Roll-out: Statements (27 May 2021)

Mary Butler: On the Deputy's question with regard to the housebound, there were 3,900 referrals in total from GPs. To date, fewer than 10% are left to be concluded. There are 240 people awaiting their first dose, 2,700 have got one vaccine and another 1,400 have got both vaccines. If the Deputy knows of specific cases and he wants to contact me, I will happily look at them for him.
