Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Iarnród Éireann (17 Feb 2022)

Joe Carey: That is no problem. I welcome Mr. Meade and the officials from Iarnród Éireann to our committee to engage with us on the all-island strategic rail review. Irish Rail has many exciting plans in place for County Clare and for Limerick-Shannon. Will Mr. Meade give an overview of the situation? I know there are plans to develop a park and ride facility near Cratloe and to open up...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (16 Feb 2022)

Joe Carey: I wish to raise the matter of pay and conditions for school caretakers and secretaries, which is a long-standing issue. An apparent breakthrough was made last September when the Department conceded that all school secretaries and caretakers should be placed on the public service clerical officer scale. A promise was also made in that deal that these people would not have to sign on during...

Vote 37 - Social Protection (Revised)
(16 Feb 2022)

Joe Carey: On this programme, I welcome the Minister's announcement that jobseeker's payments will be returning to the post office network. This is hugely significant for the network. I understand initially it will apply to new jobseekers followed by others. Will the Minister give an overview and update on how that is going?

Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 37 - Social Protection (Revised)
(16 Feb 2022)

Joe Carey: The Minister knows about this committee's interest in local employment services. Could she outline the status of the request for tender for local employment services? Is she concerned by the apparent involvement of multinationals in bidding for local employment services? Could she give some reassurance that the new model that is being proposed will not lead to a loss of that community...

Joe Carey: Prior to this meeting there was a private meeting of the committee with the Minister at which there was very open debate. At that meeting, the Minister gave an assurance that he would make a public statement today to confirm that the Clinch report would be published, that the findings and recommendations set out in that report would be implemented with in the lifetime of this Government and...

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Merchant Shipping (Investigation of Marine Casualties) (Amendment) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (16 Feb 2022)

Joe Carey: There is a fear that the Minister will not honour what he is saying here. I am not blaming him but this has happened before, in 1998 and 2010. Even the Roisin Lacey report has not been published officially. Perhaps he might give a commitment in regard to that, today. On Second Stage of this Bill, reference was made by the Minister of State, Deputy Naughten, to that particular piece of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (15 Feb 2022)

Joe Carey: I have followed the debate on my monitor. I thank Mr. Cullen and Mr. Brereton for a very clear and coherent presentation to the committee. We have had engagement in the past. I am disappointed with the engagement between IALPA and the Minister of State and her officials up to now. We have gone through the three, four or five amendments and there has basically only been progress on one.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (15 Feb 2022)

Joe Carey: The only way this can be resolved is by getting the Minister of State, the officials and IALPA back around the table. I propose that the Chairman take part in those discussions to give them a bit of urgency and to allow for some political oversight. I suggest he go to those discussions. This Bill is before the Seanad. It is basically stalled and waiting to go back in. We need a bit of...
