Sheila Terry: I move amendment No. 6: In page 5, line 25, to delete "6 months" and substitute "one month". The effect of these sections is that we will not pursue people who have less than six months of their sentence to serve. We have often spoken of the integrity of our citizenship but if we are committed to preserving and securing the integrity of the courts and of sentences imposed, those who have...
- Seanad: Transfer of Execution of Sentences Bill 2003: Report and Final Stages (Resumed). (23 Jun 2004)
Sheila Terry: We are sending out a message to people who have a sentence of six or seven weeks remaining that they will not be pursued to complete their sentence. I understand it takes resources to do so but we should be enforcing legislation. By not accepting my amendment, the Minister is admitting that we will not be pursuing people if they have six or seven weeks of their sentences left to serve.

- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Jun 2004)
Sheila Terry: The Government should open more accident and emergency facilities.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Jun 2004)
Sheila Terry: I support what Senator Morrissey said about the dreadful state of accident and emergency departments and hospitals in general. I remind him that he is a member of a party in Government. In his area of west Dublin, an accident and emergency department has been completed for up to 12 months but has not been opened.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Jun 2004)
Sheila Terry: Senator Morrissey's party is a partner in the Government which cannot deliver another â¬5 million to open that accident and emergency department.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Jun 2004)
Sheila Terry: It is a bit rich for a member of a Government party to ask the Minister for Health and Children to do something about accident and emergency units and hospitals.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Jun 2004)
Sheila Terry: I agree, but it is also my entitlement to point out the irony. Will the Leader ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to allow time to debate the recent SMI report? The report includes details on the closure of some Garda stations but we do not know which stations are due for closure. The only thing we know is that they will not be in Laois or Offaly because the Minister of...

- Seanad: Civil Liability and Courts Bill 2004: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages. (15 Jun 2004)
Sheila Terry: I thank the Minister for the manner in which he gave serious consideration to our amendments to this Bill, and for bringing forward amendments which complied as far as possible with those we tabled. We have a very good relationship in this House with the Minister and with other Ministers when they attend. This is a very good House in which to debate legislation and I am glad we can do so now...
- Seanad: Civil Liability and Courts Bill 2004: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages. (15 Jun 2004)
Sheila Terry: I thank the Minister for assuring the House that he is looking at providing additional judges. Will he ensure that equality laws apply to judges also? Are judges entitled to maternity and paternity leave? They should get the same rights as every other worker in the country such as holidays and time off. It is my understanding that the same laws might not apply to them. Who ensures that those...
- Seanad: Civil Liability and Courts Bill 2004: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages. (15 Jun 2004)
Sheila Terry: I do not want to leave it at that; the Minister should look at that again. The next time he brings legislation before the House on this issue, we should look at the equality issues in that regard.
- Seanad: Civil Liability and Courts Bill 2004: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages. (15 Jun 2004)
