Terry Leyden: Senator Buttimer is the point.

Seanad: Economic Policy: Statements (9 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: Really. Perhaps in the next century.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: What about Roscommon?

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: I thank the Cathaoirleach for allowing a matter to be raised on the Adjournment last night regarding the future of Roscommon County Hospital. Regrettably the Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Mary Harney, did not attend so I could not address my questions on the future of the hospital. Professor Drumm has made statements in the constituency and in County Galway on the future...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: I appreciate the fact that the Cathaoirleach allowed this matter to be raised on the Adjournment last night but I wish to express my dissatisfaction that the Minister did not attend to answer my questions.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: I will continue to pursue this issue but I wish to say that there is a crisis in Roscommon relating to Roscommon County Hospital.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: There is a deep concern in the area that after all these years the vital accident and emergency service may be lost.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: I hope the Leader will allow a debate on health concerns. Perhaps the Minister will come before the House to explain the situation regarding the reduction of expenditure on health next year due to economic difficulties.

Seanad: Hospital Services (8 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: I acknowledge the presence of the Minister of State, Deputy Mary Wallace. No disrespect, but I requested the presence of the Minister for Health and Children because the questions I raise are for her. I want confirmation from the Minister on the commitments given on the future of Roscommon County Hospital. The Minister of State is in a difficult position as she did not give those...

Seanad: Hospital Services (8 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: I thank the Minister of State. She stated that discussions are ongoing, whereas the impression given locally by Professor Drumm is that they have been concluded. The only glimmer of hope is that further discussions will take place. I hope the Minister will be made aware of my concerns before a final decision is made on the configuration of the two hospitals.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: I ask the Leader, if there is an opportunity next week, for a debate on the health services. All small hospitals are under a certain threat——

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: ——particularly Roscommon County Hospital, where the HSE, under Professor Brendan Drumm——

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: ——has proposed that the accident and emergency unit at Roscommon hospital will be open only from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and will close at weekends and that acute surgery will be removed.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: Only 12 months ago, the Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Harney gave commitments to Deputy Finneran that this would not happen and she should come into the House and explain the situation. Professor Drumm and the HSE are issuing these diktats. Professor Drumm would not come to Roscommon to meet the staff last week but instead went to Galway to meet staff there. As a former Minister...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: Despite a lack of support from members of the Health Board from my county, who voted against the compromise proposal, Roscommon was retained as an acute general hospital with surgery, medical and psychiatric services and we have built it up to a fantastic set up. It is a good hospital and works very well. It is very regrettable for me to see what is proposed for a hospital for which we...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: The Members shouting and roaring do not realise the blood, sweat and tears that went in to keep Roscommon as an acute general hospital. If they want to say anything, they should say it on the Order of Business. There is no point in heckling me about it.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2008)

Terry Leyden: I feel a certain disrespect to Members of the Oireachtas that Professor Drumm would not even have the courtesy to consult or brief us on what is proposed for Roscommon hospital.

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jun 2008)

Terry Leyden: I support Senator Regan's call for a rolling debate on Ireland's role within the European Union. I refer in particular to the EU directive on turbary rights, which emerged as an issue during the election campaign. This was introduced ten years ago and a derogation was put in place, but circumstances have changed. Oil prices continue to increase but there is no suggestion that the Arabs...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Jun 2008)

Terry Leyden: I thank the Leader of the House for arranging a debate on the outcome of the Lisbon reform treaty referendum so speedily. When we applied for membership of the then European Economic Community back in the 1960s we were rebuffed on at least one occasion. The French refused to accept Britain and Ireland at that time. However, that did not stop us from going back and applying again. We were...

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jun 2008)

Terry Leyden: I welcome to the House the Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Deputy Seán Power.
