Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: What the Deputy is saying is very pertinent. These things should not be mutually exclusive. There has to be a way that everyone can get to their destination, whether by rail or by foot.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: Does Deputy Matthews wish to comment?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I thank Deputy Matthews. The stakes in regard to this are very high for the west and the mid-west. There has been no discussion on the Shannon Foynes Port but Mr. Stacpoole has articulated the rail issue very well. The action plan will, it is hoped, take care of all of this. When it is published in a month or so, we will have a discussion on it. I want to return to a point made earlier....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I thank Mr. Ó Raghallaigh. I have a question for Mr. Mulligan in regard to the greenway. Rail is hugely important in terms of that national link-up. Why is Mr. Mulligan so passionate about the railway being turned into a greenway?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: What does Mr. Mulligan mean by "payback?"

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: That is a small bit unnecessary. I take the bona fides of everyone. It is not something that I like to hear. Mr. Mulligan is entitled to his bona fides but equally the other groups are as well. We can argue the toss, but I would ask that Mr. Mulligan take that back because it was unnecessary.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: My next question is for Mr. Stacpoole. What would be the cost of the upgrade of the rail line from Limerick to Shannon Foynes Port?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: My final question is for Mr. Lightfoot. If the Ballybrophy line is extended, obviously that would mean extra commuter services for Castleconnell, Birdhill and perhaps Annacotty. As a commuter line, what could it do?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I hope Mr. Mulligan understands the point I made earlier.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I made contact with colleagues to make certain that the greenway was included in today's debate because I want to look at everything in the round. I campaigned very hard to have Mr. Mulligan present.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)
