Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Dublin Bus (13 Jun 2023)

Martin Kenny: 274. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will provide details of penalties and deductions for service disruption by a company (details supplied) between 2017 and 2022, in tabular form; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27313/23]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: I thank the witnesses for their contributions. The big danger people fear is a similar situation to what happened with the HSE. We have vulnerabilities in our big infrastructure companies that can be dangerous. We also have scams that affect individuals. While all of these dangers exist the witnesses have all pointed out in their contributions that there are also great opportunities to be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: Mr. Kelly is indicating to speak and then I will come back in with one point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: A Common Vision for Cybersecurity: Discussion (31 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: The minor point I want to make is that there was much emphasis on developing courses and an academic programme for people to be trained up in all of this. One of the questions I have is about where we are going to find the people to train up. That seems to be one of the problems. Many of our universities were taking a lot of people from other countries to come here to study. They are very...

Respite Care Services: Motion [Private Members] (30 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: Respite is a serious issue across the entire country. I have been engaging with the Minister of State for the past two years on the problems we have in south Leitrim with families who are trying to get respite. In fairness, she came to a meeting in Carrick-on-Shannon and met the families and all the stakeholders. A group was then put in place to build a facility in Carrick-on-Shannon....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Sectoral Emissions Ceiling: Minister for Transport (17 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: I thank the Minister and his staff for coming in. It will be a mammoth task to reduce emissions by 50%. I will get into a few of the small details. It is my understanding that more densely populated areas are the ones in which we would be able to have most impact because we can put public transport in place that is not going long distances and is moving rapidly through the area. As the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Sectoral Emissions Ceiling: Minister for Transport (17 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: One of the big issues around that is finding staff to drive these buses. That is one of the things we come across all the time. What plans are in place in respect of that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Sectoral Emissions Ceiling: Minister for Transport (17 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: Would that not require higher salaries for people working in the sector?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Sectoral Emissions Ceiling: Minister for Transport (17 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: The Minister talked about investment and how we need to be doing a lot of these things now rather than later. That is the consensus on the challenges that lie ahead. The Department of Finance published a document last week, titled Future Proofing Public Finances. I read it and much of what is mentioned is about putting things on the long finger. This even includes issues to do with...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Standard Instrument Departures at Dublin Airport: Irish Aviation Authority (17 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: I thank Mr. Fitzgerald for the opening statement. The IAA is at great pains to point out it is not responsible for the SIDs. I understand that. Mr. Fitzpatrick is saying they are presented to the authority, which approves them on the basis of whether they meet the safety requirements, and only on that basis. In that respect, does the IAA consult in advance on their appropriateness? Does...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Standard Instrument Departures at Dublin Airport: Irish Aviation Authority (17 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: It is particularly in respect of the north runway that we hear complaints about noise and issues of that nature. Are they referred to the IAA or does it have any role in carrying out inquiries or investigations in this regard?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Standard Instrument Departures at Dublin Airport: Irish Aviation Authority (17 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: The other issue I want to raise relates to an email I received from a pilot who finds that his qualifications are not recognised because of Brexit. He did much of his training as a helicopter pilot in Enniskillen and now finds there are issues with this. Is there work being done between the IAA and authorities in Britain in this regard to ensure people who have qualified will not have to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Standard Instrument Departures at Dublin Airport: Irish Aviation Authority (17 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: Is there any issue with the IAA recognising UK licences?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Standard Instrument Departures at Dublin Airport: Irish Aviation Authority (17 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: It is bizarre that the licences of pilots who fly in and out of various jurisdictions are not recognised. It would not be the case with any other profession, such as the medical profession. It seems so bizarre that some solution has not been worked out before now given that the profession involves the crossing of borders. Mr. Fitzpatrick is saying that it is really a political decision.

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services (16 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: 257. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he intends to request a review of the current services of the A1/A2 bus route in Athlone, with a view to extending the service to Ballydangan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23190/23]

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ports Policy (16 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: 258. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he is aware of the leasing of 14 hectares of space within the port of Dublin in order to service previously expected Brexit-related traffic; if he will provide details on the cost of leasing this land; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23191/23]

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann (16 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: 259. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will provide details of penalties and deductions for Bus Éireann service disruption by county between 2017 and 2022, in tabular form; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23192/23]

Planning and Rural Housing: Motion [Private Members] (10 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: I welcome the opportunity to speak on this motion. I also live in rural Ireland in a rural area. I hear this debate about urban Ireland and rural Ireland, one-off housing and so on. I often hear people say it is unsustainable for people to live in rural areas, as if they were building a house hundreds of miles from anywhere. We have a network of roads and we build houses along those...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Ports Development: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Martin Kenny: I thank all the witnesses for coming in and for their presentations. I have a couple of a questions. One of the themes running through it all is development. All of the ports require more development. Outside of Dublin, which has specific issues and has a master plan in place, all the other ports have mentioned how the work of the offshore wind industry will be facilitated, maintained...
