Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Funding and Implementation of the National Cancer Strategy: Discussion (10 Apr 2024)

Seán Crowe: The last group who were in were making the point about new drugs. They said over the last three years 61 new drugs have been made available. That sounded really good, but in the European Union context we are the second slowest. The witnesses might comment on that. Is it down to lack of funding in the system? Clearly screening works and the priority is to expand the screening programme,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Funding and Implementation of the National Cancer Strategy: Discussion (10 Apr 2024)

Seán Crowe: It is important that we end on that note. I started off the session talking about the 215,000 people who are alive today following a diagnosis of cancer. That is the positive message out there. We focus in on the challenges within the system itself but there are many things which are working for people and I would again encourage anyone who has any concerns about their health to go and get...

Select Committee on Health: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024: Committee Stage (21 Mar 2024)

Seán Crowe: The issue was raised by the Deputy's colleague, Senator Conway, at yesterday's meeting with the HSE on the national service plan, particularly around sight loss. It was outlined by the officials yesterday that there was an attempt to try to roll out increased services, particularly in the community. There was mention of Ballincollig and the fact that a lot of transport was coming up from...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Seán Crowe: I have just a couple of questions of my own and then we will take a comfort break. A couple of things have come up. One relates to the working time directive. In the context of the HSE service plan, it was stated that the targets as regards those working 24-hour and 48-hour shifts were met last year. Are there any statistics or data in that regard? That is one of the areas in the plan.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Seán Crowe: It is not within the plan itself. It just says that the targets were met. It is a bit vague in that regard. The HSE might come back to us on that at some stage.
