Terry Leyden: It is a strange anomaly that eels will be protected south of the Border, but if they travel North they may be caught. The State is creating a new division on this island.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (3 Mar 2009)
Terry Leyden: Just as there are no grounds for depriving 170 people of their jobs, there are no grounds for preventing the export of eels from the Republic to Europe. It is strange that the Department, under the stewardship of the Minister, Deputy Eamon Ryan, is proposing a ban of 90 to 95 years. It is unheard of.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (3 Mar 2009)
Terry Leyden: I ask the Minister to come into the House to try to rectify the situation and ensure this proposal is withdrawn in Brussels. Terry Leyden: I share the discomfort of other Members with regard to passing the picket this morning of the Civil Public and Services Union. We have a responsibility to be in the House. This is not an all-out strike. I am a member of SIPTU and no instructions were received from other unions not to pass the picket. The staff on duty were aware of this and were very conscious and understanding of our...

- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Feb 2009)
Terry Leyden: It should not be up to one Senator to correct an international medium like Sky. We have Government information services and I hope they are doing their duty in correcting the hysterical and ill-informed commentary on-line from The Irish Times, RTE and this House. The comments made by Members of this House are flashed live around the worldââ
