- Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2007: Report and Final Stages (29 Mar 2007)
Maurice Cummins: I second the amendment. Senator Terry spoke eloquently on her amendment. It is a matter about which she has spoken in this House for the past five years. She is sticking doggedly to her task in this area. I ask the Minister to give consideration to accepting this amendment. If not today then at some other point, perhaps the Minister might come back to me on the question I raised about...
- Seanad: Health Bill 2006: Report and Final Stages (29 Mar 2007)
Maurice Cummins: I second the amendment. I agree with Senator Browne that the exclusion of Oireachtas Members from the board is an attack on democracy. This has become commonplace as evidenced in other Bills over recent years. I disagree with the practice creeping in whereby Members are debarred from becoming members of these boards.

- Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2007: Committee Stage (28 Mar 2007)
Maurice Cummins: I am concerned about this section and invite the Minister to explain his interpretation of it as it is not clear what is envisaged. The Minister said it is the direct opposite to what Senator Ryan has stated, and I would like to hear his explanation. It appears to me that we are trying to exclude people from areas, which has never happened in the history of the State. I urge the Minister...
- Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2007: Committee Stage (28 Mar 2007)
Maurice Cummins: I support my colleague, Senator Terry, on this matter. It is essential that people are informed and given the full information in respect of pensions and their pitfalls. On Second Stage, my colleague, Senator Bradford, raised on my behalf the question of pre-1953 contributions and the need to take them fully into account in the calculation of pension entitlements. It involves only a small...
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Mar 2007)
Maurice Cummins: I support Senator Cox's call for a debate on sentencing and the consistency or lack of it in this area. I warn against discussing any specific case at this stage, as I would be fearful that we may prejudice an appeal that the Director of Public Prosecutions may make on a case, which nobody in this House would want to see happen. We should be careful about talking about specific cases and...
- Seanad: Defamation Bill 2006: Committee Stage (Resumed) (21 Mar 2007)
Maurice Cummins: Judicial discretion has been much discussed, particularly in the past week. However, I do not wish to discuss any case in particular. Perhaps a quantum could be arrived at regarding the amount that could be given for libel. If this is possible, the provision of some guidelines to that effect to a jury could be the solution. However, I do not favour giving total discretion to judges in...
