Shane Ross: On Deputy Catherine Murphy's question on the DART underground, the Phoenix Park tunnel rail link is the first step in this. It was envisaged as a kind of first step in the DART underground project. We do not anticipate going ahead with the DART underground in the immediate future.

Shane Ross: Yes. While Deputy Catherine Murphy said it was not part of it, we get a great benefit from using the Phoenix Park tunnel link. It may be as great a benefit as we would get from using the DART underground at significant cost.

Shane Ross: It will not happen within ten years. That decision has been made. The route will be protected, but there is no intention to build it within that period. It is a matter of costs. I was also in Berlin recently and agree with what the Deputy said, but she will find that that city was originally intended for a greater number of people than 4.5 million. That is one of the reasons she found...

Shane Ross: There is a cost benefit analysis for the DART expansion project and it is constantly under review. There was a decision that this kind of money was simply not available. It is a vision, one I would share with the Deputy, but if I were to make a commitment to do it, I would be telling her an untruth.
