Topical Issue Debate: Child Protection Issues (24 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: The Minister only answers the questions he wants to answer.

Topical Issue Debate: Child Protection Issues (24 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: The Minister is complicit.

Topical Issue Debate: Child Protection Issues (24 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: Much like the penalty points controversy, the Minister says he will send the results of an already constitutionally flawed and biased investigation to the children's Ombudsman for review. The children's Ombudsman will only be reviewing a biased report, which is not primary evidence, and she cannot ask questions. This is entirely unsatisfactory. The Minister and his PR machine are...

Topical Issue Debate: Child Protection Issues (24 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: We are not.

Topical Issue Debate: Child Protection Issues (24 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: This debacle was caused by a disproportionate and unreasonable reaction on the part of the Garda and the HSE, which clearly demonstrated a lack of professionalism and an overly simplistic response to a media frenzy, to which their officials should be immune as law enforcement and health professionals. The emergency power granted to the Garda under section 12 of the Child Care Act 1991 should...

Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (24 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: The Social Welfare and Pensions Bill includes a number of measures that specifically disadvantage certain groups. Working mothers, the elderly, sick people and young people were targeted by measures that have, yet again, not been equality-proofed. We have certainly not been provided with any impact analysis of the cuts that will penalise certain members of our society. To place the burden...

Written Answers — Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources: Postcode Implementation (24 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: 14. To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources the costs and perceived benefits associated with a postcodes system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [45041/13]

Older Citizens: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (23 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: Social Justice Ireland lists the cuts over the last six years that have adversely affected older people. These include cuts to public services, such as home help and community nursing units, reductions in the fuel allowance, abolition of the Christmas bonus, increases in prescription charges, and reductions in the household benefit package. Budget 2014 has now abolished the telephone...

Pre-European Council Meeting: Statements (23 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: The Irish people have been very positive in their attitude to Europe for many years. It is good, given that we are an island community, that we had been happy to look beyond our shores, but the Irish people would never have guessed that so many decisions that affect their lives directly would be made by people who do not live here. That is very disconcerting for them in our current...

Written Answers — Department of Environment, Community and Local Government: Wastewater Treatment Issues (23 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: 54. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government if planned upgrades for waste water treatment are likely to be delayed due to the establishment of Irish Water. [44820/13]

Written Answers — Department of Environment, Community and Local Government: Environmental Compliance Issues (23 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: 59. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government in view of the fact that the European Count of Justice has several cases against Ireland over non-implementation of environmental legislation, the way these will be addressed if the implementation of the capital programme is delayed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [44819/13]

Other Questions: Arts Funding (22 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: I am sure the Minister will share my view that investing in the arts is a double winner for this State in that any money spent on arts is good for the development of any country. It is also an economic winner. Greater investment in sports would also be a double winner. Not only is sport good mentally for the young people involved but it reaps dividends by helping to reduce our health bills...

Other Questions: Arts Funding (22 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: I do not hold the Minister responsible for cuts to the arts and I understand that it is Government policy. However, there is a serious lack of joined-up thinking, while short-term policies are being implemented by this Government. The Government is aware that we are not exploiting the massive tourism potential here. Other countries like Italy and Spain take in much more tourism revenue...

Other Questions: Arts Funding (22 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: 63. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht the sections of the arts that will be affected by the most recent 7% cut in budget 2014; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [44524/13]

Written Answers — Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht: Merger of Cultural Institutions (22 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: 91. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht the position regarding his plans to merge elements of the National Museum, the National Library and the National Archives. [44252/13]

Other Questions: Departmental Customer Charters (17 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: This was tabled by Deputy Clare Daly but both of us received phone calls from people, mainly from people who had not previously visited social welfare offices. Some people were surprised at being poorly treated when they went there. In some cases they felt patronised and demeaned. In some offices, there is a customer action plan and information is displayed on how people should be treated.

Other Questions: Departmental Customer Charters (17 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: Is it possible to check that such notices are always displayed in the offices? It would be no harm if a circular was sent to people to remind staff that people coming in have not done anything wrong and should be treated with respect.

Other Questions: National Internship Scheme Placements (17 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: The principle of internship is definitely a good one, and I am sure JobBridge has been positive in some ways. However, it is easy to abuse. I know many highly qualified people who are involved in it.

Other Questions: National Internship Scheme Placements (17 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: Given that the OECD has pointed out that it is more of an employers' support than a workers' support, does the Minister not think that increasing the period from 12 months to 18 months is counterproductive in that regard?

Cochlear Implants: Motion [Private Members] (17 Oct 2013)

Mick Wallace: Time is short and I will use mine to read a story, an extract from an article in the Donegal News. It reads:Alison and John's daughter Taylor … was diagnosed as being profoundly deaf when she was 19 months old. Alison said: "We were referred to Beaumont Hospital which runs the National Cochlear Implant Programme. After months of tests and appointments she was finally accepted...
