Written Answers — Department of Health: Hospital Waiting Lists (4 Feb 2014)

Billy Kelleher: 679. To ask the Minister for Health in view of his decision to provide some detail of December waiting lists if he will allow the National Treatment Purchase Fund to publish full detail of same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5405/14]

[5406/14]

Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Closures (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: That is all the more reason it should have funded it.

Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Closures (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: I agree with Deputy Mathews that NAMA should be answering questions on this issue.

Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Closures (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: I mean no disrespect to the Minister when I say that. I do not doubt his commitment to the retention of as many of this country's medical facilities as possible. When one reads the NAMA business plan, one must compare the manner in which it is allowing this wonderful facility to be closed with the manner in which it consistently shovels money into golf courses and five-star luxury hotels,...

Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Closures (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: It defies logic. I can understand that the Minister is considering the matter in the context of his individual budget. A little creativity on the part of NAMA and the State, based on an examination of the net cost of the closure of the hospital, would assist this hospital to trade its way out of its difficulties.

Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Closures (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: I would like to read a letter I received from an employee. It states:I work at Mount Carmel Hospital and I am obviously devastated by the decision to close the hospital, make my job redundant and send me and the rest of the staff of 300 people to join the dole. However, I am also astounded at the lack of interest that appears to have been shown towards us and the hospital. On the one...

Order of Business (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: I have just learnt of the passing of our colleague, John Carty from Mayo, who served with many of us in this House. I extend my sympathies and those of the Fianna Fáil Party to his wife Kathleen and his family. There is an alcohol crisis among our young people. There are several Bills in the Government's programme regarding the sale of alcohol. When will they come forward, in view...

Order of Business (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: It is not agreed. We talk about accountability and that Parliament should have a more important role in holding Government to account. The Revised Estimates, Votes 1 to 41, inclusive, are coming back from the various committees, where I acknowledge they were discussed. However, we are now required to have a collective vote on all the Estimates. In fairness, the Opposition agrees with some...

Order of Business (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: How can the various committees discuss the Estimates only for them to be referred back to the House with just one vote to decide the full Government expenditure in every Department? That includes every cutback and hidden tax, and all the other various reductions in services. While I accept we can scrutinise them in committee, in plenary session we should be allowed to vote on each...

Leaders' Questions (30 Jan 2014)

Leaders' Questions (30 Jan 2014)

Leaders' Questions (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: The Tánaiste opposed water charges three years ago.

Leaders' Questions (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: Yesterday VHI Healthcare announced it fourth price increase in three years. I have no doubt that other health insurers will follow suit in the near future. It could be perceived that this Government is in cahoots with insurers in efforts to drive as many families as possible out of the health insurance market. More than 6,000 people a month are giving up private health insurance. The...

Leaders' Questions (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: We appreciate the Tánaiste sharing in the wonder but we would much prefer if he shared the responsibility for the escalating costs of private health insurance. Every Government policy is inflating the cost of private health insurance for hard-pressed families. I agree that because of the recession there is high unemployment and the country is in difficulty. The bottom line is that the...

Leaders' Questions (30 Jan 2014)

Billy Kelleher: The budget had a lot to do with it.
