Psychological Service: Motion (20 Nov 2007)

John O'Mahony: I compliment Deputy Hayes on tabling the motion and the Fine Gael Party for giving priority to school children and their special needs which are not being catered for by the education system. I speak on this motion having been in the front-line of the teaching profession for many years and having experienced at first hand the frustrations of principals, teachers and parents at the inability...

Child Care: Motion (13 Nov 2007)

John O'Mahony: I am glad to have the opportunity to contribute briefly to this debate on our community child care services and I commend Deputy Shatter and Fine Gael on bringing forward this motion. There is deep concern among community child care providers across the country that the proposed new child care subvention scheme will only lead to greater disadvantage within our communities. The new scheme...

John O'Mahony: I welcome the opportunity to contribute to the debate and to support the Fine Gael motion to regularise the plight of thousands of illegal Irish in the US. I congratulate my constituency colleague, Deputy Ring, on tabling the motion and on his continued efforts to resolve this ongoing problem, which has worsened since September 2001. I welcome the fact that the Government has agreed to...

Cancer Services: Statements (Resumed). (7 Nov 2007)

John O'Mahony: I welcome the opportunity to contribute to this debate on cancer services. I sympathise with all the women in the midlands and their families who are going though unbearable trauma as they face the agony of being rescreened and await the results. The Minister and the Government introduced the new cancer strategy and centres of excellence with great fanfare a couple of months ago. It was as...

Charities Bill 2007: Second Stage (Resumed) (1 Nov 2007)

John O'Mahony: Like others, I welcome this overdue Bill. The relevant legislation has not been updated in 40 years. Most Deputies have been involved in collecting for, paying to or administering charitable organisations. It is vital that the proper structures and regulations be put in place if the public is to know that their money is being put to the good use for which it was intended and if there is to...

Sports Capital Programme. (25 Oct 2007)

John O'Mahony: I agree with the comments made by everybody here regarding the importance of sport. As someone who was a teacher for 30 years, I realise the importance of this. Deputy Mitchell made the point about the use of facilities in schools for communities. It is a hugely important and burning matter and raises a number of issues, such as the question of insurance. I do not know whether this has...

National Stadium. (25 Oct 2007)

John O'Mahony: I support Deputy Mitchell in this regard. The project will be a great addition to sports infrastructure in Ireland. I note the sports that will be accommodated. I urge the Minister to ensure the pitch is the correct size for Gaelic games, not like Lansdowne Road, which was supposed to accommodate Gaelic games. Pitches for Gaelic games are bigger than those for other sports.

Agrifood Industry: Motion (Resumed) (24 Oct 2007)

John O'Mahony: I fully support the Fine Gael motion. The agricultural sector is under pressure from all sides. Farmers are getting lower prices for their products while paying increased prices for feed products. All that the agricultural industry seeks is a level playing field. Farmers in Ireland are regulated to the highest degree but must compete in the marketplace with food products from other...
