Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Report and Final Stages (13 Dec 2018)

Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Report and Final Stages (13 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: People were shouting me down. I thought this Senate was a democratic Chamber.

Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Report and Final Stages (13 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: The Acting Chair is doing his best but he has to admit that they are really coming on top of me here, big time. In fairness now-----

Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Report and Final Stages (13 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: Acting Chairman, you will have to delete some of these comments which are very unsuitable. The greatest human right is the right to life of the unborn. I made those observations when I was a member of the Council of Europe and I voted against a proposal put forward for a similar proposal to be put into that Bill. I am voting against Report Stage and against the Bill.

Seanad: Centenary of 1918 General Election and Irish Women’s Right to Vote: Motion (13 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: Excuse me, they were not intemperate. How dare the Senator make that suggestion.

Seanad: Centenary of 1918 General Election and Irish Women’s Right to Vote: Motion (13 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: There was nothing intemperate about my remarks. Everything I said was factual.

Seanad: Centenary of 1918 General Election and Irish Women’s Right to Vote: Motion (13 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: It is a great privilege to be in this House on the centenary of the 1918 election. It was rightly a seismic event. After seven years without a general election, the changes which had taken place in Irish society were laid bare in one important event which shook the foundations. In remembering the 1918 election, the single greatest theme which emerges is democratisation across a host of...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: In regard to Senator Humphreys's point on the coverage of the Oireachtas on RTÉ, I note that last night the deliberations of the Seanad went out live on Oireachtas TV all night until the sitting was finished. The most intriguing question was who was behind the screen with a phone. When the Cathaoirleach announced that the House would adjourn for 15 minutes, people were wondering if...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: Much more importantly, I would like to extend sympathy to the mayor and the people of Strasbourg and to the President of France on the tragic shooting carried out by terrorists in the city's beautiful Christmas market last night, during the sitting of the European Parliament. Of course the timing was a political statement. The attackers could not get through to the European Parliament...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: The Senator should be careful what he wishes for.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: Please do not impose that on us.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: I commend the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission on initiating and providing the Oireachtas TV channel, which broadcasts live and is a good service that provides information for the public throughout the country.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: The channel is only available if people have the proper platform to receive it. I regret very much that RTÉ has decided not to show "Oireachtas Report" on three nights of the week, that is, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Terry Leyden: We are paying €160 per year for the licence fee and the public is entitled to have a summary of events in the Oireachtas during the day. Leaders' Questions are taken at 12 noon but a person who is working will not be able to watch them at that time and they are being deprived of the opportunity to see the debate until a night when the Oireachtas does not sit. RTÉ should restore...
