- Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jun 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I support what was stated about the drugs situation, the death of Veronica Guerin and the brave acts of that girl who, as a journalist took on the godfathers of drug distribution and the drugs trade. Many of the young people who go to discos and nightclubs know the names of those peddling drugs. However, they will not tell because there is a cloak of secrecy over the distribution of drugs....
- Seanad: Health (Repayment Scheme) Bill 2006: Committee Stage. (13 Jun 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I support the words of the Minister of State and indeed, those of Senator Quinn. Those who will deal with these matters are people who have been involved in the tendering process. As a consequence, it is reasonable to assume that the optimum value will be secured for and on behalf of the State. There is no point in going into histrionics as to why this money has to be paid back. Everybody...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Jun 2006)
Camillus Glynn: They were right.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Jun 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Despite the best efforts of local authorities, environmental groups, tidy towns committees and others, we still have a serious problem with fly-dumping. It is very annoying to drive along national roads and see black bags full of litter or even old armchairs or mattresses dumped on the side of the road. We have had several debates on the matter in the House but it merits another given the...
- Seanad: Health (Repayment Scheme) Bill 2006: Second Stage. (7 Jun 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Fáiltim an Aire Stáit go dtà an Teach. I welcome this Bill which is putting right something that should not have happened in the first place. While it may have taken some time, in this case we should not sacrifice accuracy for speed. It is important that we get it right. I welcome the ex gratia payments made, which are a gesture of goodwill on the part of the Government to address the...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (7 Jun 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I call for a debate on rheumatology services. The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children, of which I am a member, recently received a deputation which outlined the shortcomings in the area of rheumatology. It is clear that the appropriately trained personnel and resources are available and the waiting time for treatment for those suffering from rheumatism and related conditions is...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (7 Jun 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Yes. Such a debate is needed urgently. As I stated in this House previously, it is clear that there are organised criminal gangs coming into this country for the purposes I outlined. I want to know what sort of monitoring is done on the people coming in here. If they are coming to do what some of them are obviously doing, then it is best that they stay away.
- Seanad: Public Hospital Land: Motion. (31 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I move amendment No. 1: To delete all words after "That" and substitute the following: Seanad Ãireann âcommends the Government on the measures it is promoting to improve access for public patients to acute hospital care; âsupports the Tánaiste's policy to develop private hospitals on the campuses of public hospitals in order that up to 1,000 beds currently reserved for private patients...
- Seanad: Public Hospital Land: Motion. (31 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: It is all about delivering services to more people. This initiative will increase the delivery of services and reduce the cost to the Exchequer. I appreciate that there will be concerns and some people may be afraid of what is new, but this has the capacity to work. It will increase the number of public beds and the savings made can be used elsewhere in the health service.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (24 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: The Supreme Court ruling must send a shiver down the spine of every parent the length and breadth of this country. I strongly support what Senator Brian Hayes said, as must all right-thinking people. This House has taken the lead in the past in tackling urgent matters and no Member would object to sitting at any time, even on a Sunday and with the shortest possible notice, to address the...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (17 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Recent newspaper reports stated that people walking on the boardwalk along the River Liffey adjacent to Liberty Hall were heckled and verbally abused by people who were high on drugs and openly injecting themselves and by others selling drugs. This is unacceptable and I call on the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the Garda SÃochána to address this as a matter of urgency.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (17 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Tá sé múchta. Last week I asked the Leader about the position of the Medical Practitioners Bill and when it would be brought before the House and I seek an update on that.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I support the remarks by Senator Brian Hayes and others. I have great regard for the Garda SÃochána and it is a tremendous body. The utterances made, which smack of politics, are unfortunate and ill-advised. It behoves all of us in this House and the Dáil that regardless of whether we agree with legislation, it becomes law when on the Statute Book. We are duty bound to support it....
- Seanad: Accident and Emergency Services: Statements. (9 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I welcome the opportunity to debate accident and emergency services. Regrettably, in some cases we are talking about abuses of the service. This is a social problem, it is not new. I worked in the health service as a nurse for many years and I recall having to wait eight hours with a person for treatment because he or she was not in as urgent a need as those already there. It is important to...
- Seanad: Accident and Emergency Services: Statements. (9 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Any statistic that muddles the figures for accident and emergency attendance is unhelpful. We have excellent general practitioners and people should present to them in the first instance. We all know the use being made of the accident and emergency units. Having been a health professional in the midland region and having dealt with Mullingar Regional Hospital, Tullamore Hospital and...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (9 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: As I was attending a meeting, unfortunately, I did not hear what Senator à Murchú said about honouring the memory of Thomas Kent but I strongly support what he said. It is outrageous that someone who unselfishly gave his life for the cause of Irish freedom should be buried, like that of a common criminal, within the confines of a prison. Thomas Kent was a noble patriot which was...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (9 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: Is it in the Mullingar accord?
- Seanad: Accident and Emergency Services: Statements. (9 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I would not go that far. That is pushing it.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (4 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I support the remarks made by Senators Brian Hayes and Ormonde on education, a matter I raised only last week. Developers have a role to play in the provision of additional school places. A debate on education with the Minister for Education and Science would be useful. I am sure many useful suggestions would be made by Senators on all sides of the House. On the issue of motor insurance, I do...
- Seanad: National Pensions Reserve Fund: Motion. (3 May 2006)
Camillus Glynn: I wish to share my time with Senator White.
