Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish-Speaking Community: Earcaíocht sa tSeirbhís Phoiblí: Plé (14 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: An í an tseirbhís traenála sa teanga atá i gceist?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish-Speaking Community: Earcaíocht sa tSeirbhís Phoiblí: Plé (14 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Glacaim leis sin, ach an gceapann na finnéithe go bhfuil ciníochas leis an gcuspóir 20%?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish-Speaking Community: Earcaíocht sa tSeirbhís Phoiblí: Plé (14 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Glacaim go bhfuil easpa infheistíochta i mbealach éigin uaireanta, ach tá ardú i mbliana sa mhaoiniú atá ag dul isteach ón Aire, an Teachta Calleary. I ráiteas tosaigh Fhórsa, tá go leor tagairt déanta do míchothromaíocht, ciníochas agus rudaí mar sin. An bhfuil spás á chruthú ag an gcuspóir 20%...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish-Speaking Community: Earcaíocht sa tSeirbhís Phoiblí: Plé (14 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Glacaim leis sin. Is é fáth a gcuirim an cheist sin ná, má bhreathnaítear ar na Gaelscoileanna atá lonnaithe timpeall na tíre faoi láthair, tá go leor éagsúlachta iontu. Tá soláthar Gaeilgeoirí ag teacht amach astu i láthair na huaire a laghdófar an fhadhb seo diaidh ar ndiaidh thar na blianta atá romhainn....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish-Speaking Community: Earcaíocht sa tSeirbhís Phoiblí: Plé (14 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Tá súil agam go mothaíonn gach duine a chuireann isteach ar phost go bhfuil fáilte go dtí an tír rompu agus ba mhaith liom a bheith cinnte go mothaíonn. Ba mhaith liom é sin a rá freisin. Bogfaidh mé ar aghaidh go dtí an bhunfhadhb a fheicim féin. Luadh go mbeidh gá le 6,000 nó 7,000 státseirbhíseach líofa...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish-Speaking Community: Earcaíocht sa tSeirbhís Phoiblí: Plé (14 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Tá mo smaointe féin agam maidir leis na meánscoileanna lán-Bhéarla ach is scéal eile é sin. Tá ceist dheireanach agam. Conas is féidir an sprioc 20% a bhaint amach gan córas dáshrutha a chruthú atá scoilte idir oibrithe le Gaeilge agus iad gan Ghaeilge? Rinneadh tagairt éigin dó sin.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish-Speaking Community: Earcaíocht sa tSeirbhís Phoiblí: Plé (14 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Gabhaim buíochas as an airgead a chaitheann Fórsa ar scoláireachtaí Gaeltachta. Tá sé sin an-dearfach. Gabhaim buíochas le Paul McSweeney agus Aisling Cusack as teacht isteach.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish-Speaking Community: Earcaíocht sa tSeirbhís Phoiblí: Plé (14 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Gabhaim buíochas leis na finnéithe go léir as an taispeántas. Uaireanta, ceapaim go mb'fhéidir go bhfuil míthuiscint ar an oileán seo maidir leis na stádais atá ag na teangacha éagsúla sa tír. Tá dhá theanga oifigiúla ann, is iad sin, an Ghaeilge, ár dteanga dhúchais, agus an Béarla, teanga a...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: I would like to be associated with the condolences to Senator Costello on the loss of her dad. It is a very sad time for her. I would also like to say my own hello to Mr. Ken Kerr. As someone who lived for quite a while in Maryland, it is great to have him here today. I wish to raise the issue of critical skills visas for drivers coming into this country to drive trucks for road haulage...

Seanad: Budget 2026 (Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation): Statements (8 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Aire Stáit as ucht a bheith anseo. I will focus almost exclusively on the education side of the budget today. Before I do, there are three quick comments I want to make. First, I received hugely positive feedback from postmasters around the country last night and this morning on the measures in the budget to support our rural post offices in remote,...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: I acknowledge the exciting new partnership between the BWT Alpine Formula One Team and the Espire Education STEM On Track initiative, which uses motorsport to engage students in STEM. Over 600 students from 45 schools are taking part, building their own racing carts and competing in national finals. It is practical, inclusive and inspiring. It is exactly the kind of experience we should be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Well said, Sive. The last time I crossed paths with the Bower they broke our hearts in the all-Ireland volleyball semi-final a few years ago. We will forget about that for now. Chuaigh Sive O'Brien go dtí an Ghaelscoil. Sa bhunscoil, bhí sí sa Ghaelscoil. I know we are primarily talking about exams today and the time that is given but outside of exams, how has Ms...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: On a different committee with the Chairman, Deputy Crowe, the coiste Gaeilge, we are both pushing the idea that reducing the marks in the new draft leaving certificate for the oral exam is scandalous but we will get back to that on another day. Ms Bissett has been campaigning on the extra time for two years. I ask her to please keep the foot on the throttle until it is done, please. I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: I have one other question. Ms Bissett touched on this in relation to teachers. How does she find the level of training and CPD? Councillor Paul Taylor asked me a question on this. He has a background and history with the system on this. Are teachers equipped to best support students with dyslexia on an ongoing basis with up-to-date training?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: I have one last question. I thank Mr. Ewing for the answer.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Are the waiting lists starting to improve since Covid? That is a question from Councillor Caroline O'Reilly in Meath. She is concerned about it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: I thank the witnesses for being here. The mantra constantly thrown about both when I was a student in secondary school and a teacher for ten years in second level was that the leaving certificate is a test of what you know, not what you do not know. I completely disagree with that, based on evidence. Can I have a simple yes-no answer? Will the 2026 leaving certificate for students with...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Just "Yes" or "No" please.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Shane Curley: Why are we doing a pilot on something that is very evidently destroying the mental health of young people? Why do we not just roll it out and be less cautious? Ms Feeney said there are 236 permanent staff, and that number rises to 346 at peak times. She mentioned international best practice and subcontracting reviews that will cost the taxpayer millions of euro. Why are we doing that?
