- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Ash Dieback and Other Forestry Issues: Discussion (16 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I am sorry. I did miss the start.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Irish Aviation Authority: Engagement (16 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: The officials are welcome. We really appreciate them giving of their time. I know the officials do not deal with the regional balance for airports, but I am going to twist the question in a way and frame it in the context of the environmental impact of aviation. It may not be the fuel for the aircraft, but many people flying here to visit the west coast land in Dublin because 80% or so...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Irish Aviation Authority: Engagement (16 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I just wanted to get that in. I said I would throw it in under the environmental heading. I do not know about the fuel for the aircraft or how much more it would take. Mr. Fitzpatrick said it is only minutes from Shannon to Dublin on a flight, but it is a long way by car. The torment arises when you have to go Dublin because flights do not leave from your local regional airport.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Irish Aviation Authority: Engagement (16 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: Yes.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Irish Aviation Authority: Engagement (16 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I thank Mr. Fitzpatrick.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I raise the issue of carer's payments in families where more than one person has qualifying care needs. As the Leader will know, carers currently receive half a carer's allowance on top of the full carer's allowance for any additional people they care for. Some families may have two, three or four children with qualifying additional care needs. Much of the time, the position of these...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: As the House knows, the Ryder Cup, a world renowned event, is coming to Adare, County Limerick, in 2027. It would be remiss of us not to look at the tourism prospects this could bring to Ireland. In County Limerick, we have what is called the Desmond trail. It has Adare Castle, Askeaton Castle and Desmond community centre in Newcastle West. Adare Castle only opens from June to...
- Seanad: Transport Policy: Statements (10 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I will share time with Senators Tully and Andrews.
- Seanad: Transport Policy: Statements (10 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: It is great to have the Minister here. I will speak on a number of key areas in transport that would begin to address the great regional imbalance that is choking Ireland's potential. The regions outside Dublin must finally be given a fair share of investment and opportunity. The M20, the motorway between Limerick and Cork, is not a luxury; it is a necessity. This stretch of road, at...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I wish to address an issue related to the provision of public swimming pools in County Limerick. On the N69, Askeaton swimming pool, which has been closed since 2023, is scheduled to reopen, thankfully, this autumn under the management of Swim Ireland. Other than that, the county has been without a swimming pool for the past two years due to this issue. On the N21, where there is a large...
- Seanad: Pregnancy Loss (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2025: Second Stage (9 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I stand in full support of Sinn Féin's , not just as a legislator but as someone who has lived the reality that this Bill seeks to recognise. I commend my colleague, Senator Ryan, on the work she has put into this Bill and the thoughtfulness that is in it. Miscarriage is common, painful and too often invisible. I know this because I went through it myself. When I miscarried, I was...
- Seanad: Post Office Network: Statements (9 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I am sharing time with Senators Tully and Andrews. I will take four minutes and they will take three each. I welcome the Minister of State. I welcome the opportunity to speak today on an issue that goes to the very core of Irish communities: the future of our post office network. As has already been said, over the past ten years 257 post offices have closed across the country. That is a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Farmer Mental Health and Well-being: Discussion (9 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I thank the Cathaoirleach. He stole my line. It is great to hear about our witnesses meeting the farmers at the marts. Farmers are very sociable and the social side of it is a lot of what helps that helps them. I had a farmer on to me last week. He has a quad bike and he had an inspection on his farm. He got a bit of a grilling saying he had to have a licence and had to do a course. He...
- Seanad: Sea Fisheries: Statements (2 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I welcome the Minister of State. Ireland is surrounded by some of the richest and most bountiful fishing waters in the world. Despite this, our native fishing and seafood industry is in a steep decline. What should be a cornerstone of our coastal economy is now a sector in deep crisis that has been battered by quota cuts, fuel price hikes and increases in costs, all compounded by decades...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Dog Control and Sheep-Worrying: Discussion (2 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I thank all the witnesses for attending. It is great to see so many organisations agreeing on one important point. To go back to the controlling powers, it is not possible to have 100,000 dog wardens, but prevention is definitely better than cure. Do the witnesses agree that we need to increase the number of dog wardens? Looking at them county by county, apart from in Dublin and Cork, the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Dog Control and Sheep-Worrying: Discussion (2 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: They are giving their dogs a good run of the land.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Dog Control and Sheep-Worrying: Discussion (2 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I have never been asked at the veterinary practice whether my dog is microchipped or whether I have a licence. It is not something people are asked, so it would be a good to-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Dog Control and Sheep-Worrying: Discussion (2 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: It always comes back to the owner of the animal, as the animal does not know any better.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Issues Facing the Road Haulage Industry: Irish Road Haulage Association (2 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I thank the witnesses for attending. I know the role truck drivers play and how they keep this economy going. I am slightly biased because I married a truck driver, so I also understand the down side of it. It is quite good for some marriages because we are like ships passing in the night. On the shortages, which is a massive issue, I know some of the hauliers who have South Africans...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Issues Facing the Road Haulage Industry: Irish Road Haulage Association (2 Jul 2025)
Joanne Collins: I find it is for the love of driving. It is like being a nurse or doctor - people do it for the passion. They do not do it for the hours or the pay cheque. Once people get into it, it is quite difficult to get out. As Mr. Hyland said, if people try to leave, they will be offered more money.
