Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

George Lawlor: How can we not proceed in the knowledge that we will have a certain portion of this scheme dedicated to active travel, but the motorway will be unaffected by that active travel part? It will certainly be a component of it but it will not be connected to it. It is connected in some way, but indirectly. This whole thing has been held up for about 18 months as a result of the active travel...

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

George Lawlor: Okay. I was a councillor at this end of it as well and we are looking at about 18 months at this stage. I also want to talk about the impact on Rosslare Europort. This is not just a motorway in Wexford; it has a strategic role to play for the entire region. To give an example, prior to Brexit there were six sailings a week to mainland Europe but there are now 40 or more sailings, which...

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

George Lawlor: I am just wondering if we are overengineering to the extent where we could be stretching our money better.

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

George Lawlor: It is not the case that the money is specific. We were told on numerous occasions that the money was specific to urban-based projects.

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

George Lawlor: I believe Mr. Walsh and Ms Fitzpatrick were going to answer the question about the funding for the Oilgate to Rosslare project. I ask them to shed some light on that. Given that I believe in excess of €150 million has been spent on Rosslare Europort through the Brexit adjustment fund to make it a smart port, improve the customs facilities there, etc., can anything be done from a...

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

George Lawlor: The reason I asked was because the specific project to which I referred is a junction to a junction. At the end of each junction, it does not go anywhere else. I appreciate that it is a piece of the jigsaw in terms of future-proofing. There are other projects that start in a town and end in a village. Such projects can be deemed useful for end users.

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

George Lawlor: We have an excellent active travel team in Wexford. Its members informed me that under the policy, they were being told it was not to be outside urban areas. I am not sure if that was accidental or intended to drive their particular projects.

Housing: Statements (10 Jun 2025)

George Lawlor: The current housing crisis in this country can only be described as a catastrophic failure of leadership and policy, leaving countless families in despair and homelessness while developers and landlords profit from the misery. The Government's inaction and ineffective measures have turned the dream of so many of getting a social house or owning a home into a cruel joke. In my county of...

Protection of Employees (Employers’ Insolvency) (Amendment) Bill 2025: Second Stage (28 May 2025)

George Lawlor: I welcome the Bill and I will outline just two concerns I have. There is a range of laws that can come into play when an employer closes down. European Union law governs some of these laws. The legislation in this area is usually concerned with ensuring minimum rights, underwritten by the Exchequer, while allowing the parties to agree more substantial or enhanced terms. Of course, there...

Gaza: Motion (28 May 2025)

George Lawlor: The ongoing genocide in Palestine perpetrated by an Israeli Government hell-bent on wiping out an entire people is something about which we as part of an international community should be hanging our heads in shame. The entire international community is standing idly by and muttering fine words while thousands of babies, children, women and men are wiped out by evil. The entire...
