Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Primary Care Centres (2 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: I thank the Minister. I know from my experience of dealing with other primary care centres around the constituency that there is a really strong, enhanced community and patient experience at such centres. Patients can build long-term relationships with their providers, which can lead to better communication and more personalised care, which is really promising. I am really excited about...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Primary Care Centres (2 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: Primary care centres add huge value to communities across the country, including my own in Carlow-Kilkenny. There is a lot of excitement in my home town of Graiguenamanagh about our new proposed primary care centre. I would like an update on how that is progressing.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Primary Care Centres (2 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: That is most welcome news. I understand the new centre is planned to be a two-storey facility of approximately 20,000 sq. m, with accommodation for GP practices and community nursing, as well as dental services and therapies. However, the key thing about this primary care centre is its rural location, and the accessibility challenges a lot of people where I am from have in getting access to...

Peter Cleere: The Commissioner is very welcome to Ireland. I am from the small village of Graiguenamanagh in County Kilkenny on the Kilkenny-Carlow border in the south east of Ireland. I cannot impress upon the Commissioner enough the significance and importance of the agribusiness and agrifood sector to Ireland. It is not just about the trade; it is also about the impact it has on local shops, local...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: The tillage sector contributes €1.3 billion annually to the Irish economy, and we know that the area under tillage has fallen. The Irish Farmers' Journal stated in an article a couple of months ago that 1,400 tillage farmers have exited tillage. Can the witnesses talk a little about what they are hearing on the ground, what their experience is and why this is happening?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: So viability is the primary reason the witnesses are hearing on the ground. I was really interested in the comments on a marketing and promotional aspect around tillage and grain. If you go into a shop and buy a rasher or sausage, it is guaranteed 100% Irish and you know you are buying an Irish product. What are the plans to the get the Irish stamp on our grain?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: What is the import percentage for the grain we use? We export beef and have enough to use ourselves, but we import a lot of grain.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: On the costs, bearing in mind the standards we have here in Ireland, what would be the difference between producing grain in Ireland compared with, say, our cheapest competitor abroad?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: We are fully supportive of the tillage survival package. We understand and recognise the importance and significance that tillage has to Ireland from food-security and economic perspectives. While I am aware that budget negotiations are ongoing, you can be assured from our side of the House that we will do everything we can to get as good a deal as possible for the tillage sector in the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: The Deputy knows that if a sector wants extra money, it gets it from the Minister, Deputy Chambers.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: I know there is a lot of grain in Kilkenny.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: What I have just heard is unbelievable regarding the viability of tillage. Would anyone invest in a business or sector that is not viable? That is a yes-no answer because I am conscious of the time. If a business was not viable, would Ms Byrne invest in it?
