Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021: From the Seanad (14 Jun 2023)

John Lahart: I thank the Ceann Comhairle. I congratulate the Minister and his officials. I brought forward a Bill during the previous Dáil regarding the issue of the antisocial use of scramblers, and my party colleague, Deputy McAuliffe, and I introduced a stand-alone Bill on that issue way back when the Dáil was sitting in the convention centre. Sometimes I find it hard to believe that was...

Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy. (25 May 2023)

John Lahart: It may surprise some colleagues and even the family that a Dublin Deputy would want to make a contribution. I never served with Noel Treacy in this House, but I served in three Governments, working for a Minister, in which Noel Treacy served. They were heady electoral days for my party, Fianna Fáil. Noel was considered part of the country and western element of the party, along with...

Accommodation Needs for New Arrivals: Statements (23 May 2023)

John Lahart: Taking up that theme, I wonder that if the Government were to communicate with-----

Accommodation Needs for New Arrivals: Statements (23 May 2023)

John Lahart: Does Deputy Cowen want a few minutes? I am sharing my time, in that case.

Accommodation Needs for New Arrivals: Statements (23 May 2023)

John Lahart: I would ask the following of the Deputies opposite. If information were given to them, would they communicate it to their communities? Would they communicate the State's requirements of different communities in respect of the whole issue of refugees and asylum seekers? Would they drive that message home in order to accommodate the asylum seekers and refugees? It can be tedious...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Commemorative Events (18 May 2023)

John Lahart: I am heartened to know that a constituency colleague has an equal interest in this. The Deputy has probably more access to the Minister than I would have. Those were fairly comprehensive responses, particularly in relation to the commemorative plague. The Minister will agree 15 years is a long time to wait but I am grateful that she, as Minister, has ensured that it is finally happening....

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Sports Funding (18 May 2023)

John Lahart: I thank the Cathaoirleach Gníomhach for the opportunity to come in and the Minister of State, Deputy Byrne, for his response. Clubs in our constituencies applied for the latest round of funding and received the maximum, €150,000, or a little less. Due to building and construction cost inflation, that €150,000 will cover substantially less work than it would have when they...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Commemorative Events (18 May 2023)

John Lahart: 12. To ask the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht when planning for the famine remembrance days will be incorporated into her Department (details supplied). [12876/23]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Commemorative Events (18 May 2023)

John Lahart: I thank the Minister for taking my question. I tabled this question in February and it might have done a tour of Departments before it landed on the Minister's desk so I am grateful to her for taking it today. It relates to a commemorative date plaque of the first famine commemoration, which was held, not in Skibereen in 2009, but at the Custom House in Dublin, appropriately, in 2008.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Commemorative Events (18 May 2023)

John Lahart: I am grateful. I presume the impetus for that came from the Minister. It is 15 years later. Key figures from NGOs and other organisations are often involved. A constituent of mine, Mr. Michael Blanch, has been a strong advocate of famine commemoration. He will be delighted to hear that the plaque will finally be placed in the Custom House. A plaque is installed to mark the site of the...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Commemorative Events (18 May 2023)

John Lahart: He would have more access to Ministers.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Planning Issues (9 May 2023)

John Lahart: I will not repeat points already made. Unfortunately, legislation going through the House is not going to have any impact on what has happened in Kingswood or other areas. I thank the Minister of State for his replies to the matters submitted by my two colleagues and me. There are four points I want to make. Can the Minister of State clarify whether anybody has an appeal before An Bord...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Planning Issues (9 May 2023)

John Lahart: I will not repeat what my colleague said, but perhaps I can add some additional points. As a public representative, when I was in conversation with a few residents from Kingswood Heights recently, I came across five of these masts in a very small geographical space. I became more conscious of masts, including very close to where I live One of the things we need to know is what is the...

Safe Deposit Boxes and Related Deposits Bill 2022: Second Stage [Private Members] (20 Apr 2023)

John Lahart: For 250 years, or two and a half centuries if we go back to the earliest deposit box referred to by Deputy Ó Cuív, these boxes have lain undiscovered, unmoved and untouched, by and large, possibly along with other items, including works of art, maps, documents or larger items. The Bill proposes, in a very sensitive, legitimate and legally safeguarded way, to enable this generation...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Special Educational Needs (23 Mar 2023)

John Lahart: 69. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if she will develop a centralised application system to schools for children with ASD and additional needs; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13889/23]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Special Educational Needs (23 Mar 2023)

John Lahart: I wish to ask the Minister if she will develop a centralised application system to schools for children with autism spectrum disorder, ASD, and additional needs. If she is in a position to do so, will she comment on pilots that exist in this space already and make a statement on the matter?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Special Educational Needs (23 Mar 2023)

John Lahart: I thank the Minister of State. There is a lot of food for thought. As the Minister of State knows, the scarcity of ASD places and other places for children with additional needs and special classes, notwithstanding improvements, which I wish to acknowledge, places huge financial, psychological and other unnecessary stresses on parents who are already stretched as parents of children with...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Special Educational Needs (23 Mar 2023)

John Lahart: I detect quite a lot of movement. I met the Tallaght Parents Autism Support Group recently, who are grouped together because they all have children with autism. Often, they find they are applying to the same schools for their children. They are disciplined and resilient enough not to fall into the awful trap of competitiveness with each other if there is a place available. If there was a...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (23 Mar 2023)

John Lahart: Under Standing Orders I am entitled to contribute on a question.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (23 Mar 2023)

John Lahart: I am coming in on the general question Deputy Ó Ríordáin asked-----
