Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Oct 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: His term is nearly over. God only knows where he will stop.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Oct 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: There is another year left.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Oct 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: Absolutely.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Oct 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I congratulate the director of the Hugh Lane Gallery for organising a major collection of the works of Andy Warhol, which is opening tomorrow. This was a huge undertaking. It took nearly five years to put it together. It will be the most specific exhibition of the work of the strange, controversial genius that was Andy Warhol. It gives a great opportunity to art lovers and the general...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Jul 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I ask the Leader to arrange for the Minister with responsibility for the arts, Deputy Catherine Martin, to come before the House at the earliest opportunity to outline her views on recent media coverage regarding the practice of the Arts Council of funding lucrative consultancy work for former employees. In particular, it would be important that the Minister would be able to assure the House...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Jul 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I appreciate that. I have been very careful. I have tried to raise this matter on a number of occasions on Commencement matters and I find an amazing push-back against it from the Minister's Department, which is quite perplexing. I have to resort to this. We have all been shocked, as no doubt the Minister was shocked, by the revelations about bad governance at RTÉ. Perhaps this...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (21 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am pleased to have the opportunity to pay tribute on my behalf, and that of Fianna Fáil, to the late, great Mary Jackman. I warmly welcome her husband, Nick, daughter, Nicola, her sister, Ursula, and the rest of the family. I also welcome her Fine Gael colleagues in the Oireachtas, past and present. In particular, I welcome my neighbour, Michael Finucane. I do not have the...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Election of Cathaoirleach (21 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: Along with the previous speakers, I congratulate the Senator on her re-elevation to the Chair. I also congratulate her on succeeding in having this committee established on a proper and continuous footing. I am certain she will do a very good job. She did a very good job the last time. Better she is getting. The best experiences I had as a member of the previous committee were on the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I do not want to add to the Cathaoirleach's troubles but I fully support the comments of Senator Malcolm Byrne and other colleagues. I have been a Member of this House for 16 years and have always restrained myself when it comes to comments about the Lower House or Áras an Uachtaráin.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I will certainly not cross any lines. All I will say is that it cannot continue like this. If this kind of thing continues, it will test the Cathaoirleach, the Ceann Comhairle and the whole body politic. That is the feeling of the people on the ground, despite the group on the left who think they can cheer on anything that is said. We have a Constitution. We have had great Presidents and...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: My time is almost gone. I will briefly draw the Leader's attention - I am sure she is aware of the matter - to the announcement today by the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and a number of Ministers of the shared island cross-Border funding to expand the Ulster University's Derry Campus. This is grant aid from our Exchequer to support the Derry university to the tune of €56 million. This is...

Seanad: Election of Acting Chairperson (20 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I propose Senator Seán Kyne.

Seanad: Civil Defence Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages (20 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I echo what Senator Carrigy said. It is an opportunity for us to acknowledge the tremendous work that is being done all over the country by the Civil Defence. As we speak, my home town of Listowel is inundated with a flood that is probably biblical. This follows on from a similar one-in-500 years flood experience in Tralee at the weekend. We also had some very serious car accidents in...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: Like many Members I am sure, I attended a briefing by the Irish National Teachers Organisation, INTO, held across the street this morning. If anyone has not gone there yet, I recommend they do. A very large turnout of teachers from all over the country was present. Among the many valid points raised, one particularly stood out, which was that in 2009, a great number of posts of...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Challenges Facing Women Accessing Education, Leadership and Political Roles: Discussion (13 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am in my office in Leinster House. I did not think I was so high up on the list. I thank and welcome our visitors, whom I listened to remotely with great interest. I would like to clarify one thing before I go any further. I know that the National Women's Council of Ireland is an NGO that receives very significant funding from the State. Is the same true of Women's Collective Ireland?...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Challenges Facing Women Accessing Education, Leadership and Political Roles: Discussion (13 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: Very good. I just wished to clarify that. I regard myself as a feminist. I have had that approach in all of my political life. My cousin was one of the first female Fianna Fáil Deputies elected in rural Ireland. I know all about misogyny from what she suffered in trying to retain her level of support and her seat. Men did not have any mercy for her or for the frailties of a woman...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Challenges Facing Women Accessing Education, Leadership and Political Roles: Discussion (13 Jun 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am sorry. My machine went on the blink and I missed a piece of that response. Countess Markievicz became the first chair of the Fianna Fáil Party under Éamon de Valera in 1926. Unfortunately, she died soon afterwards.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Company Law (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister of State. He and the Cathaoirleach will know that the Companies Act 2014 is a very important document. I was a Member of the Oireachtas when it was passed by these Houses. It was very well teased out and was passed after robust examination. The matter I wish to raise relates to sections 216 and 217 of the Act. These sections relate to the rights of citizens to...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Company Law (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister of State for a comprehensive response, which I will obviously study. I certainly will not hesitate to take his advice regarding the ongoing review. I have emailed the CEA in respect of this matter but, to date, I have not received a reply. Perhaps I sent it to the wrong address, but I will certainly renew my attempts in light of what the Minister of State said.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Company Law (31 May 2023)

Ned O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister of State.
