- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: I join with other speakers in requesting the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Deputy Rabbitte to come to the House for a debate not only on the RTE debacle but the behaviour of the press in general. We have come to a point where we must reflect seriously on the sweeping powers of the press. I encourage my colleague, Senator Mullins who has made salient points that...
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: In terms of the child benefit payment, I think the comments of the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Deputy Leo Varadkar were very correct and telling. It is completely inappropriate that the child benefit payment is not in any way a means tested payment. Even at this late stage, I call on the Government to look at the possibility of self declaration. It is wholly unacceptable...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: I also seek an urgent debate on education. It was great to see 15,000 or 16,000 students outside Leinster House yesterday. During the Celtic tiger period it was distressing that students were not active in voicing their political views. To a large extent they became focused on monetary issues. However, the fact that 15,000 students were at the Merrion Street gate of Leinster House...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: I have one other issue to raise. I support Senator Whelan's call for a debate on older people. We have seen during the years how successful the Council for the Status of Women and the Council for the Status of People with Disabilities have been; what we need is a council for the status of older people, as the population will age significantly in the coming years. That is a good development...

- Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (16 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I also welcome the Bill, which implements the policies of the previous Government, although Opposition Senators may not wish to acknowledge that. There is good intent on all sides of the House to clean up this particular mess. We are working assiduously to clean up the economic and financial mess, and the Taoiseach is abroad today trying to do...
- Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (16 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: This legislation is very welcome. However, there is one thing I would like the Minister to take into consideration. He should consider the people who will end up having to carry out remedial works and the contractors employed to do such work, as there have been shady developers and builders operating over the years. The last thing we need now is people taking advantage of householders who...
- Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (16 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: Senator à Domhnaill is eating into Senator O'Neill's time.
- Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (16 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: On a point of order, Senator à Domhnaill is continually interrupting the Senator. Give him a chance.
- Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (16 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: What planet is Senator à Domhnaill on?
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: Senator O'Brien should withdraw the word "lie".
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: I am concerned about the impact that certain elements of the capital expenditure review programme have had or will have, particularly in the area of juvenile detention. There is a clear commitment in the programme for Government that youths of 16 and 17 will no longer be detained in St. Patrick's Institution, which is part of the Mountjoy campus. Members of the Joint Committee on Justice,...

- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: I do not blame Senator Darragh O'Brien and others for getting excited about the banking issue. I ask them to accept the Government's good faith in this regard. I listened to the Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Deputy Brian Hayes, the Taoiseach and others saying they will deal with the banks if the interest rate cuts are not passed on. It is appalling that these banks, of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: That is fine.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)
- Martin Conway: Some of the individuals who were in Dublin Castle advising us on how we can get this country back working again should start by looking into their own souls and paying tax in this country. One can help this country to get back on its feet by paying tax. If these people are not prepared to do that, the Government should consider introducing legislation to alter the existing tax exile...
