- Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (10 Nov 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I thank Senator Gavan for his words and all colleagues across the floor and on both sides of the House for their support of this Bill. It took support from all sides to ensure it would reach Report Stage in Government time. It is historic because not many Private Members’ Bills have traditionally become law so we very much look forward to this becoming law and welcome the support of...
- Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (10 Nov 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I have reserved my comment on this matter until we reached amendment No. 5. I reiterate that I am glad that there is a provision for the coming into force of the Act. I ask the Minister to confirm, in respect of the earlier amendments, that there is nothing in the Bill to prevent reapplication.

- Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (10 Nov 2016)

Ivana Bacik: I know others wish to speak at that time.
- Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (10 Nov 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I am delighted that the Bill has been passed. I sincerely thank the Minister for her kind comments. It has been a pleasure to work with her and her officials. Her constructive approach has been welcome and positive. I thank her for closely engaging with us on this legislation from the start. I echo Senator Davitt's words about her capacity for hard work and, in particular, her...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2016)
Ivana Bacik: Others have spoken already about the US presidential election result and clearly that is the issue uppermost in everyone's mind today. I call on the Deputy Leader to organise a debate on foreign policy in this House in light of that election result because there are serious implications for Ireland on which other speakers have touched. Ms Hillary Clinton's defeat is a huge disappointment...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2016)
Ivana Bacik: The House will be taking Committee Stage of the Heritage Bill today. Many of us have expressed opposition to section 8 and the provision which would allow the cutting, destroying and removal of hedgerows in August and burning in uplands in March. We have all received multiple e-mails on this and I hope we can see a way of resolving that issue on Committee Stage.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I object. It is not appropriate.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Media Freedom in Turkey: National Union of Journalists (3 Nov 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I thank the witnesses for their comprehensive presentation. I agree with Deputy Darragh O'Brien that all members unreservedly condemn the appalling incursions on press freedom we have seen in Turkey since the failed coup. We also join the witnesses in condemning the coup. It is clear, however, that the response has been disproportionate. If one examines the list of media outlets that have...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Media Freedom in Turkey: National Union of Journalists (3 Nov 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I support the Chairman's proposal that the committee writes to the Minister. I also suggest we ask him not only to outline the concerns expressed here with the Foreign Affairs Council but also directly with the Turkish ambassador. Have we already invited the Turkish ambassador before us?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Media Freedom in Turkey: National Union of Journalists (3 Nov 2016)
Ivana Bacik: It can be discussed separately. If we write to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade we might ask him to raise concerns with the Turkish Embassy as well.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Statement of Strategy: Motion (3 Nov 2016)
Ivana Bacik: It makes sense to include it. I am looking at the strategy to see where it could best be inserted. That is a consideration. Obviously, it is a matter for the Department of Defence. There is a reference under the values part of the strategy to a secure world and a stable and secure rules-based international environment. Specific reference is made to cross-departmental work, defence and...
- Seanad: Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (Hague Convention) Bill 2016: Second Stage (27 Oct 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Minister to the House. I give my wholehearted support and that of the Labour Party to the Bill. It is very welcome and all who have spoken have endorsed it. The Minister set out clearly the impetus behind the Bill and set it in the context of international humanitarian law more generally and in the context of a climate where we are seeing increasing recognition of the need to...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Female Genital Mutilation (26 Oct 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Minister of State and am delighted that she is responding to this issue. I raised it with her at the UNFPA launch last Friday. In light of recent media reports that an act of female genital mutilation, FGM, was reported to the HSE and the Garda in September, will the Minister of State say how many cases of FGM have been reported to the Garda since the enactment of the Criminal...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Female Genital Mutilation (26 Oct 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I thank the Minister of State for her reply, in particular for acknowledging the work of AkiDwA and the Irish Family Planning Association. I was at the launch of the specialist clinic, which was very important. I wish to make three brief points in response. First, I am aware of the difficulty with crime statistics, and AkiDwA has raised the matter with me. We need to change the way crime...
- Seanad: Corporate Manslaughter (No. 2) Bill 2016: Second Stage (26 Oct 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Minister and commend Senator Mark Daly on introducing this Bill. Others have spoken about the long history and background to the introduction of an offence of corporate manslaughter. It is not a new idea, it has been around a long time.I am happy, on behalf of the Labour Party, to support the Bill. We introduced the first Labour Party Bill on corporate manslaughter in 2001....
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2016)
Ivana Bacik: I thank the Leas-Chathaoirleach for welcoming to the House Dr. Ashwani Kumar, a former Minister for justice from India and a member of the Indian Parliament who is here as my guest along with Professor Jane Ohlmeyer of Trinity College. It is an honour to have both of them here, particularly at a time when Trinity is welcoming many students from India and other countries worldwide. In that...
