- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Oct 2013)
Terry Brennan: This country has created 34,000 jobs in the past 12 months and I am very happy that 25% of those jobs were created in the Border region from which I come. I congratulate a company in County Cavan, of which I am sure my colleague from County Cavan is well aware and with which I had dealings in my previous employment, namely, Wellman International, on reaching its 40th year in business in...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Job Creation and Mortgage Support Schemes: Discussion with Department of Social Protection (2 Oct 2013)
Terry Brennan: The vetting is not valid for a specified period. One must go through the vetting procedure if one changes jobs.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Job Creation and Mortgage Support Schemes: Discussion with Department of Social Protection (2 Oct 2013)
Terry Brennan: Thank you.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Job Creation and Mortgage Support Schemes: Discussion with Department of Social Protection (2 Oct 2013)
Terry Brennan: I will be brief because one of the three questions I wanted to pose has already been answered. Could the witnesses give some indication as to when they will be in a position to review the Gateway scheme to determine its success or otherwise. How long do vetting approvals last and are they reviewed? If a person is, for argument's sake, vetted and approved for a carer position and then...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EU Framework on Market Access and Financial Transparency of Ports: Discussion with Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (2 Oct 2013)
Terry Brennan: I can think of at least one private port we have. Will it be affected by this new regulation?
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Oct 2013)
Terry Brennan: The Garda has advocated for quite some time for the electronic tagging of robbers, burglars and repeat criminals with long records of breaking the law on a continual basis, criminals with prison records and criminals who continue to break the law while out on bail. Many offences are carried out by criminals out on bail. Gardaí are requesting the Government to act on the introduction of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Oct 2013)
Terry Brennan: I condemn outright what happened in Athlone at the weekend, as have other Senators. A famous Deputy, whom Members in this House may have served with, said that such perpetrators should be hung and flogged. I agree with flogging but I would hang them from something else for an hour a day for 12 months. If that was done then people might not continue to commit these offences.
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Sep 2013)
Terry Brennan: Cheaper than tap water will be too.
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Sep 2013)
Terry Brennan: The Senator is more interested in the Cabinet.
- Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Mr. David Begg (25 Sep 2013)
Terry Brennan: Cuirim fáilte roimh Mr. Begg. I sincerely think him for his very interesting of the 1913 Lock-out. He is the general secretary of an organisation that represents over 55 unions and 833,000 men and women in the country. He must be a very busy man. He has gone a long way, which is right, and he has reached the top of the profession. His early days of negotiation were not that long ago...
- Seanad: Order of Business (24 Sep 2013)
Terry Brennan: I support the call for the Minister, Deputy Noonan, to come to the House to discuss the very important issue of the possibility of the 9% VAT rate going back to 13%. It has been a great year for tourism, given the success of The Gathering and, as other Senators have noted, some 9,000 jobs created. I would be fearful in this regard. Many businesses have invested substantial amounts in their...
- Seanad: Order of Business (24 Sep 2013)
Terry Brennan: I would hate to see VAT going up to 13%, which would make it nearer €4 for a glass of water.
- Seanad: Directive of European Parliament on Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children: Statements (19 Sep 2013)
Terry Brennan: Tá mé ag fanacht anseo agus ag éisteacht le gach éinne eile le uair an chloig go leith. Níl mórám le rá agam. Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit ar ais go dtí an Seanad. Ní raibh mé anseo nuair a bhí sé ina Seanadóir. In my humble opinion, it beggars belief that 92% of sexual abuse takes place in the victim's...
- Seanad: Directive of European Parliament on Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children: Statements (19 Sep 2013)
Terry Brennan: It is their own flesh and blood.
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Sep 2013)
Terry Brennan: At the risk of being accused of being personal or parochial, as a former ESB employee, I am very concerned over how my former colleagues are being treated by this and the previous Government with regard to their defined-benefit pension scheme. Like all ESB employees, I paid almost 7% of gross wages for 40 years to the scheme. Sadly many of my colleagues have not reached retirement age...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Sep 2013)
Terry Brennan: It is not suitable. We are told by the Government that there are increasing funding difficulties with pension schemes owing to people living longer and the financial downturn. It is no fault of any of those who contributed for many years. A contribution of 7% was and still is a significant amount to pay towards a retirement scheme. I call on the Leader to have an urgent debate with the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company: Discussion with Chairperson Designate (18 Sep 2013)
Terry Brennan: There is not much more I can add to what my colleagues have already said. I live within ten yards of Carlingford, which I believe to be the tourism capital of the country. I am lucky in that I live by the sea. It is very important to me, my family and my own diaspora when they return home. A number of colleagues were in Carlingford a couple of weeks ago at a think tank. They had a great...
- Seanad: SI 325 of 2012 - European Union (Quality and Safety of Human Organs Intended for Transplantation) Regulations 2012: Motion (20 Aug 2013)
Terry Brennan: If we accept this motion and annul the statutory instrument, we will be taking a retrograde step. We will be the only country in the European Union that will not have a coherent and detailed structure relating to donation, testing, characterisation, procurement, preservation, transport and transplantation of organs. To go forward we need the human tissue Bill to be published and public...
- Seanad: Construction Contracts Bill 2010: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (23 Jul 2013)
Terry Brennan: It was amazing to hear Senator Quinn say that 1,168 days - perhaps we are close to 1,169 by now - have passed since this Bill was introduced. Seán Gallagher brought these issues to my attention when I was serving as a local councillor on Louth County Council. He was very concerned. As has been said, Senator Quinn was the only person up here who took on Mr. Gallagher's idea. This Bill...
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jul 2013)
Terry Brennan: At the outset I thank my colleague Senator Keane for her advice this morning that people who are less likely to take their breakfast in the morning are more likely to have a heart attack. As one who does that regularly I must thank her and assure her-----
