Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition to Reopen Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's Emergency Departments: Discussion (16 Nov 2023)

Michael McNamara: I thank the witnesses for their consistent advocacy on this issue, which is probably the biggest issue in the mid-west. They are right. Nobody in the mid-west has not been affected by the hospital there. I have been in the old accident and emergency department and the new one with a family member and I have been in an accident and emergency department in Dublin with a family member purely...

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition to Reopen Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's Emergency Departments: Discussion (16 Nov 2023)

Michael McNamara: Nobody asks this question about which hospital we should close in Dublin so we can open one in the mid-west. No one ever asks this question, but they are asked it. I am, though, going to ask a relatively difficult question. As a public representative, I raise this issue, as does Deputy O'Donoghue, as do the representatives from Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin and other...

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition to Reopen Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's Emergency Departments: Discussion (16 Nov 2023)

Michael McNamara: I thank the witnesses. That is my question. Most people accept there will be a need to have another model 3 or model 4 hospital in the mid-west if the population continues to increase, etc. In the meantime, however, it is a question of what is safe or what can be done in the short term to improve a dire situation. I think Noeleen has answered this question. Even if it is not possible to...

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Local Government (Mayor of Limerick) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Nov 2023)

Michael McNamara: We said yesterday we would go through Schedule 1 and this is the appropriate time to do so. It was given that the purpose of the Bill is to extend real powers to an elected mayor. Part 1 of Schedule 1 sets out powers that are to be retained by this - “speaker” is what it is in English but the legislation provides for a “Príomh Chomhairleoir”. I propose the...

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Local Government (Mayor of Limerick) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Nov 2023)

Michael McNamara: Yes.

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Local Government (Mayor of Limerick) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Nov 2023)

Michael McNamara: Yes, because I think we would all agree that they are powers that the current mayor enjoys but that the new mayor will not enjoy, notwithstanding the fact that the new mayor will supposedly be more powerful than the old one. The question, therefore, is why these powers will not be enjoyed by the new mayor. It is a valid request if we are to tease out this legislation in any meaningful way.
