- Seanad: Central Bank and Credit Institutions (Resolution) (No. 2) Bill 2011: Second Stage (18 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Brian Hayes. He indicated in his opening statement that Part 3 of the Bill provides for the establishment of a fund, to be known as the credit institutions resolution fund, which will provide capital for a bridge bank. Will this bridge bank effectively be the NAMA of credit unions? One wonders whether there is a need for such a body. It is my...
- Seanad: Ambulance Service (18 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: I tabled this matter in light of the reduction in the ambulance service in the Caherciveen area, which covers most of Kerry South from Killorglin to Castlecove, a distance of some 40 miles. It also covers the extensive area from Valentia up to Dromod-Maistir Gaoithe. Ambulance cover for the area is being reduced to the hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. I cannot understand the reason this is...
- Seanad: Ambulance Service (18 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: I thank the Minister of State for his comprehensive response. I imagine that approximately 90% of all car accidents happen at night. How does one cover an accident involving two cars if one paramedic is sent to the scene of the accident where five people may be injured and there is not an ambulance at the scene? An accident occurred in my constituency last year where the fire brigade crew...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: I wish to raise two issues. Would it possible for the Leader to ask the Minister for Education and Skills to come to this House to explain why sample papers for Project Maths, which is a new syllabus, were only made available to students last week? It is not good enough that these sample papers only became available last week. Also, students and teachers have expressed concern about the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: I do not know what it is this morning but Members opposite seem very cantankerous and obstreperous.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: I wish to raise two issues. First, I thank my colleague from Kerry, Senator Daly, for bringing to the attention of the House the great work Build 4 Life does. I would appreciate any help he can give because I have had several meetings with the Minister, Deputy Reilly, on this issue. We have made ground and, I hope there will be a resolution or a solution to the issue in the near future....

- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: Where does a mere mortal like myself go to remove that logo from Fianna Fáil? In fairness to Mr. Seán Gallagher, he was smart enough not to go there. He did not use that logo and he is benefiting from that.

Tom Shehan: The question to the Leader is how I should go about removing that logo-----

- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: That is fine. I am coming to my point. He failed to inform that he was a former CEO of the credit union development agency himself.

- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: Then I would suggest that the Leader either contacts the Press Council of Ireland about this man's article, in which he states what politicians should and should not comment on, when he himself had a vested interest. It brings to mind the image of having a chip on one's shoulder. He has a six inch block on his shoulder.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: Well done.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: I bring to the attention of the House an article written by Mr. Bill Hobbs in last Monday's Irish Examiner which stated it was inappropriate for politicians to comment on or question the Financial Regulator regarding his dealings with credit unions. Mr. Hobbs describes himself as a former ACC Bank official, banking commentator-----
- Seanad: Statements on Finance (6 Oct 2011)
Tom Shehan: I welcome the Minister and thank him for his comprehensive overview of the banking sector. My questions are on the credit union sector and the imminent credit institutions Bill. There has been much talk of the credit unions being in a great deal of bother owing to investments they made. Credit unions are run by volunteers. There are not too many chartered accountants, barristers or...
