Seanad: Orders of Reference of Select Committee: Motion (7 Oct 2008)

Dick Roche: Yes.

Seanad: Orders of Reference of Select Committee: Motion (7 Oct 2008)

Dick Roche: Yes. We understand this.

Seanad: Orders of Reference of Select Committee: Motion (7 Oct 2008)

Dick Roche: We caused questions to be asked both in the secretariat of the committee and within the Houses of the Oireachtas.

Seanad: Orders of Reference of Select Committee: Motion (7 Oct 2008)

Dick Roche: I will give the Senator the name of the person in question. He can then decide for himself.

Seanad: Orders of Reference of Select Committee: Motion (7 Oct 2008)

Dick Roche: Sorry——

Seanad: Orders of Reference of Select Committee: Motion (7 Oct 2008)

Dick Roche: Senator O'Toole has asked a valid question. The secretariat of the committee asked for advice on this from the Houses of the Oireachtas. As this issue was brought to my attention at 3 p.m. today, I took it very seriously. I will give the Senator the name of the official and he can check up on it. Senators Ormonde and Alex White both raised the issue of information. There was a failure of...

Seanad: Orders of Reference of Select Committee: Motion (7 Oct 2008)

Dick Roche: Lest there be any ambiguity, it was the authorities of the Houses of the Oireachtas that gave the adjudication.

Seanad: Orders of Reference of Select Committee: Motion (7 Oct 2008)

Dick Roche: The person who gave the adjudication on this is the person who, in this House and the other House, is in charge of the whole issue of establishing committees. If the House wants to establish that person's name, I have no problem with the House adjourning to allow the Senator to check that issue with that individual. It is a serious issue.

Seanad: Sub-Committee of the Joint Committee on European Affairs: Motion (7 Oct 2008)

Dick Roche: I realise that there are differences in the Standing Orders of both Houses. I want to thank Members, and in particular Senator O'Toole, for drawing this to my attention. It is very important that the committee gets under way without any question of it being ultra vires and certainly without giving people who might have malign intent the opportunity to challenge it. Now that it satisfies...

Order of Business (25 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: Like Fine Gael.

Lisbon Treaty: Statements. (18 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: It goes without saying that all of us who supported the Lisbon treaty and who believe passionately in Europe as the way forward for peace and progress are disappointed with the outcome of the referendum. The people have made their decision, however, and that decision must be respected. It must also be understood and it should certainly not be distorted. The Taoiseach made clear last Friday...

Seanad: Lisbon Treaty: Statements (18 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: I thank the Senators. I will take Senator Donohoe's last point. The debate was demeaned earlier today when people shouted at each other. This is not a time for shouting at each other but for calm reflection. It is a time to respect the people, who have given us a very clear view. If we value anything in this country we should value our democracy. In this matter the only sovereign...

Seanad: Lisbon Treaty: Statements (18 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: It is too early.

Seanad: Lisbon Treaty: Statements (18 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: I thank Members for inviting me back to the House. I seem to have spent more time addressing this House in the past two years than when I was a Member of the House. I hope that is not a sign of things to come. It goes without saying that all of us who supported the Lisbon reform treaty are deeply disappointed with the outcome of the referendum, not just for ourselves but for Ireland. We...

Seanad: Lisbon Treaty: Statements (18 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: They speak from both sides of their mouths. There is a need to examine why people voted against the treaty and, most importantly of all, to establish how best we can address these reasons. As a country, we now face just about the greatest diplomatic and international challenge in our modern history. We have to convince ourselves and, more importantly, others that we want to find a solution...

Dáil Sittings: Motion (17 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: I move amendment No. 1: To delete all words after "Dáil Éireann" and substitute the following: notes that the Government through its ongoing management will continue to address the important economic and social issues facing the country over the coming months; welcomes the Government's firm commitment to position the economy for sustainable development over the years ahead, while adapting...

Dáil Sittings: Motion (17 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: I am sharing time with Deputy Cuffe. I welcome the opportunity to contribute to the debate. I will try to focus on the issues. If the current problems, particularly on the economic side, facing this country could be resolved simply by Deputies staying at their desks over the summer period, I, for one, would break ranks and support the motion. I especially welcome the opportunity to put on...

Dáil Sittings: Motion (17 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: ——is how rich it is to hear Sinn Féin at this stage recognising the damage it may well have done. I am sure Deputy Gilmore, like me, recognises that Deputy Ó Caoláin tried to do his level best——

Dáil Sittings: Motion (17 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: ——to put space between his own culpability for the destruction of our economy in the months ahead, but we will come back to that.

Dáil Sittings: Motion (17 Jun 2008)

Dick Roche: In the past decade or so, Ireland has experienced unparalleled levels of economic prosperity and success, something with which Deputy Ó Caoláin does not agree.
