Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Digital Green Certificate and Rapid Antigen Testing: Discussion (12 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I asked what work has been done in Italy on the digital green certificate. What happened with the 29 cases where the antigen test was positive but a PCR test was negative? Were the people just released from quarantine?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Covid-19 Testing and Air Travel: Nuevo Ireland (12 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Dr. Kenny is making the sale for this in relation to transport, particularly aviation, from the point of view that the danger into the future, until we have everybody vaccinated, booster shots ready and all the rest of it, will come from variants. This is a system that can be deployed. What Senator Dooley has said needs to be done in relation to information on ramp-up capacity. I assume if...

Residential Property Market: Motion [Private Members] (11 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We have a housing policy that has failed. We have heard many times over the years of the consistent and constant failure to build council houses, affordable cost rental homes and houses that can be bought at affordable rates. We have heard all the stories in recent days: of people who are paying extortionate rates of rent; of those who are lucky enough to avail of HAP and who still have to...

Europe Day: Statements (11 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Europe has a history of civilisation, invention and innovation, but also a history of vicious colonial powers, wars and a balance of power that was maintained through threat of war and mass armaments. The EU project itself was born out of the end of a genocidal world war. The EU has played its part in changing the nature of relationships across Europe. It has played a vital role in the...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Northern Ireland (11 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: 2. To ask the Taoiseach if he will report on his latest communications with the First Minister and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland [24263/21]

Ceisteanna - Questions: Northern Ireland (11 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We dealt earlier with how we finally have an element of justice for those who were killed in Ballymurphy in 1971. We feared the possibility of unilateral action from the British Government in respect of an amnesty for killings involving state forces. We believed we were in a bad situation in respect of relationships and what have you. Obviously, Brexit has been absolutely destabilising and...

Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Middle East (11 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: 110. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade his engagements with the Israeli authorities regarding the commitment to recognise the state of Palestine; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24262/21]

Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Ministerial Communications (11 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: 86. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade his engagements with the British Government regarding the protection of the Good Friday Agreement and recent comments in relation to the Irish Protocol; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24261/21]

Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Brexit Issues (11 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: 389. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade the engagement he has had with the UK Government and European Commission regarding recent developments with the Ireland protocol. [13248/21]

Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Statements (6 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: There was a recent scare of Covid-positive cases in Dealgan House Nursing Home. All necessary protocols kicked in and the worries were allayed. I commend everyone involved. However, I want to again bring up the issue of Dealgan nursing home and the tragic outbreak last year that resulted in the loss of the lives of 22 residents. The Minister and the Minister of State, Deputy Butler, met...

Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Statements (6 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I accept that. I have a couple of questions for the Minister and the Minister of State about information that is required from the HSE. I accept that, in the near future, they will have to go back to the families on the issue of the mechanism that will provide the affected families with the answers that are required.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement: Engagement with Mr. Barry Andrews, MEP (5 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I think Deputy Haughey is next. The Chairman can put me in after that. I have not put my hand up yet.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement: Engagement with Mr. Barry Andrews, MEP (5 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I was going to ask what the view in the European Parliament on the British Government was. Obviously, there is a lack of trust. How could there not be? I imagine it is always the case when dealing with Boris Johnson. Even when one thinks one has a deal, one does not know whether it is play-acting or real politics. I welcome Mr. Andrews's comments earlier on Northern representation....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement: Engagement with Mr. Barry Andrews, MEP (5 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: The Chairman has asked about some of the issues I was going to deal with. Regarding the parliamentary assembly, it is welcome Mr. Andrews has had conversations even if they are not for public consumption regarding the North and across all and sundry. What interactions has he had at EU level on his proposal, its viability and what people's thoughts are on it? It is much better if we can get...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement: Engagement with Mr. Barry Andrews, MEP (5 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I agree with Mr. Andrews that we need to have such a discussion. I am not saying a referendum would be held tomorrow. We must play our part by having a full conversation, including on what the new Ireland would look like - the landing zone of a new united Ireland. The idea is that a new entity would be an opportunity to create something new and better. I agree with Mr. Andrews that we...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Report of the Covid-19 Rapid Testing Group: Discussion with Science Foundation Ireland (5 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I thank Professor Ferguson. This engagement is informative and necessary. I agree that we need a pilot scheme as soon as possible so that this can be brought into operation in respect of aviation. Professor Ferguson spoke about how PCR testing is more accurate. This issue can be dealt with by having more rapid antigen testing. How many such tests are needed to make up for this...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Report of the Covid-19 Rapid Testing Group: Discussion with Science Foundation Ireland (5 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: For how many days would the test be done?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Report of the Covid-19 Rapid Testing Group: Discussion with Science Foundation Ireland (5 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are looking at something that could be €50 or €60, which would obviously make up for the deficiency in antigen testing because it will be done very often. It would give us a roadmap with which we could operate. We need to look into this and a pilot needs to be set up as soon as possible regarding aviation. That is just it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Report of the Covid-19 Rapid Testing Group: Discussion with Science Foundation Ireland (5 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Is the SAGE material that Professor Ferguson spoke about earlier all available online? I know there are a number of papers. If it is not, we would need that extra information and also the detail about the IT systems etc. If we could get that as a committee, that would be brilliant, or do we need to go and seek that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Challenges Facing Travel Agents and the Aviation Sector: Discussion (5 May 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I thank Mr. Dawson and Mr. Hackett. In fairness, they have been very comprehensive in setting out what they require. What Professor Ferguson spoke about and the possibility of a pilot programme could provide us with a roadmap for aviation, combined with the digital green certificate but there is a necessity for us to follow up to ensure that we have the capacity at both levels. There is no...
