- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: -----not remove the infrastructure that makes this State great. The companies that have prospered and done well will be sold because we need the money. We are no longer economically independent. However, the infrastructure will not be sold. At the Leader's discretion, could he arrange for the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Deputy Howlin, to attend the House in the coming...

Martin Conway: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Veterinary Practice (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (21 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister. He was in my county at the weekend doing very important business. It was an extremely successful visit, in particular from the point of view of agriculture. We will see the rewards from the visit in the future. I commend the Minister on it. The legislation is non-contentious and is supported by all sides of the House. It is a question of common sense prevailing....

Martin Conway: Will the Senator register?
- Seanad: Order of Business (21 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I, like others, commend all involved in the Chinese Vice President's visit over the weekend. I also commend the people of County Clare who gave him a warm welcome. As has often been the case in the past, the scenery and hospitality of County Clare is used to the advantage of this country. I commend the Lynch family in Sixmilebridge whose farm the Vice President visited. He also visited...

Martin Conway: Well said.
- Seanad: Food Wastage: Motion (15 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I also welcome the Minister. It is a great compliment to a Minister when a leading farmer comments, as one did to me recently, that the biggest worry in the farming industry is that Deputy Simon Coveney will be promoted to some other Department and the industry will lose him. Apparently, the Minister spoke for an hour and a half, without notes, at a dairy producers' conference in Cork. He...
- Seanad: Food Wastage: Motion (15 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: This is an important point, if Senator Mooney does not mind.
- Seanad: Food Wastage: Motion (15 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I know of a situation in Maynooth where sandwiches were ordered for 500 people but only 50 turned up. The unwanted sandwiches were sent to the Dublin Simon Community, who refused to take them because they could not trace the producer. That type of thing is not common sense and we need to deal with it. I apologise for wasting Senator Mooney's time. I do not do that type of thing.
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: Yesterday I spoke about three people I met at the weekend who intend to emigrate to Australia. Some 100 young people have departed from the village of Kilmihil in my constituency in recent years. I assure colleagues on the other side of the House that none of those 100 gives a toss whether we have an embassy in the Vatican. It is an outrage that all we can talk about in this House, day in...
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I am coming to it. Furthermore, it is a pity that parliamentarians from all sides of the House are fixated on this issue when the country is broke and taking dictation from the EU and IMF. We need some realism when it comes to this. Will the Leader allow a debate on the jobs initiative, with a specific slant on rural job creation? As I mentioned at the beginning of my contribution, I come...
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: -----from which hundreds of people have emigrated. The jobs initiative is a very welcome development, but I ask for a debate specifically on the rural dimension of job creation.
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: What about Fr. Peter McVerry?
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: Exactly.
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: Senator Bacik referred to waste management. We will try to arrange for the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government to come before the House to address that matter. The specific issue to which the Senator refers relates to Greyhound, the private operator, and Dublin City Council, the local authority. That issue should be dealt with by the latter, as has been the case in...
- Seanad: HSE National Service Plan: Statements, Questions and Answers (14 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: Senator Leyden's party betrayed the people of Ireland when in government.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I spoke to three young girls at the weekend who, unfortunately, are obliged to go to Australia because they cannot get work in Ireland. The last thing on their mind was whether or not we have an embassy in the Vatican. We should grow up and realise that people in this country have far greater concerns than that.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I noted with interest the publication yesterday of a report by the Higher Education Authority on the potential elevation of some institutes of technology to university of technology status. We have seen in the past how such elevations can be successful, with the University of Limerick, formerly the National Institute of Higher Education, now enjoying a proud reputation. However, we have...

Martin Conway: He is jockeying for position.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: That is old rubbish.
