Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht: Future of Public Service Broadcasting and Impact of Covid-19 on the Media Sector: Discussion (11 Nov 2020)

Niamh Smyth: With that, we will bring our deliberations to a conclusion. I wish to mention Sinéad Hussey, who is not a new correspondent but is new to the north east. There was a time when we did not have anybody. That has made a significant difference to the Border region. She does drill down. Sinéad Crowley's coverage of the arts has been outstanding. This area has, of course, suffered...

Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht: Future of Public Service Broadcasting and Impact of Covid-19 on the Media Sector: Discussion (11 Nov 2020)

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Brexit Supports (10 Nov 2020)

Niamh Smyth: I concur with the Minister of State on the local authorities. Both Cavan and Monaghan county councils have done tremendous work in bringing businesses to the table in facing up to the realities of Brexit, along with our LEOs, which have organised round-table conversations, encouraging and enabling them to access the supports the Government is making available. I ask the Minister of State...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Brexit Supports (10 Nov 2020)

Niamh Smyth: I ask the Minister of State to outline the plans in regard to Brexit preparations. As a Border region Deputy, this is of huge concern to me. Businesses on the ground feel the political agenda has been somewhat taken over by the pandemic, naturally enough, but it is a very worrying time for small and medium businesses, the agri-food sector and local authorities.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Brexit Supports (10 Nov 2020)

Niamh Smyth: I thank the Minister of State. I accept his point that very strong measures have been put in place in terms of Brexit readiness. There was always hopefulness in the businesses’ viewpoint as to where Brexit might leave them. We are on the eve of Brexit and we will certainly be doing business very differently than in the past. Despite the fact the Border region has received...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Maternity Services (5 Nov 2020)

Niamh Smyth: I thank the Minister of State for coming to the House to deal with this important issue, which concerns the midwifery-led unit in Cavan General Hospital. I am sure he has been briefed on the background to this unit, which was established back in 2004. Sixteen years on, it has delivered many babies to many happy mammies and daddies across the Border region and the midlands area. In 2016,...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Maternity Services (5 Nov 2020)

Niamh Smyth: I thank the Minister of State. I cannot help having a suspicious mind as to why a review is being held in the first place. That said, the Minister of State's response is welcome. I sense that he, the Minister for Health and the health team are fully behind the midwifery-led unit, and that is clear in the response. This is an issue I feel passionate about. This is a terrific service which...
