- Seanad: Action Plan for Jobs 2012: Statements, Questions and Answers (6 Mar 2012)
Martin Conway: Well done, Minister. My question is simple. He spoke at a conference here recently hosted by Ahead. The issue I want to raise is that the joined up thinking among Departments still has not reached the level we want. That programme is being supported by FÃS but the problem is that it could have the funding pulled, although it is a job creation initiative. Are there working groups within...
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Mar 2012)
Martin Conway: I thank the Leader for organising the briefing on the European fiscal compact treaty. The coming weeks will involve a journey to define our future as a nation. Whatever the result of the referendum, it will be a defining moment in our history and it will affect generations to come. I am pleased that the "Yes" bus has got off to a good start. I am also pleased that our colleagues in Fianna...
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Mar 2012)
Martin Conway: Any independent-minded Member of the Dáil or the Seanad who believes in Europe and wants to support the "Yes" campaign should make a declaration now and get in behind the campaign. The bus is going and it will not be diverted by scaremongering about bondholders, promissory notes or anything else that has no relevance to this treaty.
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Mar 2012)
Martin Conway: I call on civil society and people in business who realise the importance of this country having a central role in Europe to get out and campaign for a "Yes" vote. I also call on voluntary groups, farming organisations-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Mar 2012)
Martin Conway: -----those involved in education and those who have the interests of this country at heart to get out, join the bus and campaign for a "Yes" vote.
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Mar 2012)
Martin Conway: I congratulate our colleague, Senator Mary White, on her elevation in her party. Sometimes it is an advantage when one's name does not appear on the preferred list.
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Mar 2012)
Martin Conway: Yes. Like other Senators, I look forward to an informed debate on the fiscal compact. It may be a good idea to invite a spokesperson for the Referendum Commission before the House as soon as it is appointed to explain how it proposes to run the referendum campaign, distribute information and inform members of the public about a treaty which will define the future of many generations to...
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Mar 2012)
Martin Conway: Well said.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I, too, welcome the referendum on the fiscal compact treaty. I am one of a few people on this side who advocated that we should have a referendum. I have faith in the judgment of the Irish people. I believe the result of the referendum will be positive, which will increase Ireland's standing in Europe. I welcome the proposed debate on the treaty. I propose to the Leader that the Seanad...
- Seanad: Protection of Employees (Temporary Agency Work) Bill 2011: Second Stage (28 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: That is a good one.
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I refer to civil servants working in the Office of the Revenue Commissioners in Ennis, County Clare. There is significant speculation that there will be redeployment from the office which has been open for more than 20 years and was one of the first to be decentralised. The building is owned by the OPW. It would be a retrograde step if there was to be a diminution of services at the office...
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: Such as Eircom.
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I would agree with that.
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I listened with great interest to Senator Crown's description of medical politics. It is sad to think that self-centred medical politics caused such delay to the construction of a hospital for our children. For the past ten to 15 years, during the greatest boom we will probably ever experience, the project could never even get off the ground. I call for a debate on planning in this country....
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: What an outrageous attack on the Leader.
- Seanad: Social Welfare Appeals (22 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister to the House. I submitted this matter to highlight the fact that a young man of 18 years of age in County Clare has been refused disability benefit, although he has been diagnosed with ADHD. This young man will not work for the rest of his life, because he is incapable of working. His comprehension ability, delayed reaction and a myriad of other conditions feed into...
- Seanad: Social Welfare Appeals (22 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I accept there has been a medical review carried out, but knowing the young man, I would have a different view. Will the Minister instruct her officials to facilitate this family with an oral appeal allowing it make the case in person, rather than a written appeal which is turned down by letter? I would be most grateful if the Minister would facilitate an oral appeal.
- Seanad: Wind Turbines Bill 2012: Second Stage (22 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I commend Senator Kelly on introducing this Bill. This area requires much discussion and analysis. From the perspective of this House, it is a first and positive step. Many "ifs" and "buts" have been expressed by a number of people. I have been contacted by some groups in my area of County Clare, as Senators Kelly and Leyden in Roscommon and others have been. Such groups have issues with...
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: I am concerned with the information Senator Keane has put before the House today. However, I am also deeply concerned that some of the accountancy firms that audited and signed off on the books and accounts of institutions such as Anglo Irish Bank and the Irish Nationwide Building Society are still in business today and are-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Feb 2012)
Martin Conway: -----still advising central banks and other financial institutions. Something must be done. I question whether any of them has ever been held accountable for some of their work. I am doing research on it at the moment and I will revert accordingly. I support the invitation to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Deputy Howlin, to come to the House in the near future to discuss...
