Bernard Durkan: In view of the furore created around it, in the final analysis would it not have been useful to research all situations surrounding the potential appointment in a way so as to ascertain, for Mr. Watt's benefit, what might be necessary to avoid in the future and to avoid making a potential mistake? - Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with Secretary General of the Department of Health (19 Apr 2023)
Bernard Durkan: I would have thought it would have been very appropriate for person of his standing, having carried out the functions he did for the previous number of years, under the circumstances, personal and otherwise, at the time, that somebody should have seen fit to apologise to him for, as it were, messing up a very important appointment. - Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 38 - Health (Further Revised) (19 Apr 2023) Bernard Durkan: I welcome the Minister and congratulate all those involved in making the strides that have been made over the past three years through the lockdowns and the pandemic. Trojan work was done by all sectors of the health service despite the magnitude of obstacles thrown in their path, but this work must continue apace. - Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 38 - Health (Further Revised) (19 Apr 2023) Bernard Durkan: I do because this morning's discussion would see the need for setting up a new department of frustration where public representatives who have raised questions, such as those we have been listening to this morning, including those raised by the Minister, could vent their frustration rather than allow it to affect their health. We have dealt with an important issue this morning. I am not...

- Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (18 Apr 2023)
Bernard Durkan: The reason for this inquiry is to identify issues of a particular importance that arise from time to time and the need to respond by bringing forward the relevant meetings of the committees, if necessary, to deal with these. In particular, I mention housing, which is an ongoing issue that needs to be dealt with very regularly. I also mention health, which is an obvious one because we need...
