- An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: Last Christmas Day, we had a flood in Wexford. Ten days later, a scheme opened. On 2 November, a month ago, we had a tornado in south County Wexford, as I have brought to the floor before. Last night they held their second meeting. I was the only Deputy for the county, for the second time, to attend with these families, who have suffered more than €1 million worth of damage between...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: Yes, I will.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: I thank the Chairman for organising the meeting and our guests for attending. Mr. Walsh spoke about honouring contracts. How long has TII been set up as an organisation?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: Were all of these contracts inherited?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: I understand that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: This is a legacy issue up to a point. Having engaged with TII as a former president of the Irish Road Haulage Association, IRHA, I understand how the contracts work. The provision in those contracts allows for a discount for multiple usage, as do the by-laws. Is that correct?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: He may have addressed it earlier but Mr. Walsh addressed it with me previously. As part of honouring the contracts, the discount provision has never been honoured in that it has never been given. Is that not the case?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: What are TII's obligations under environmental objectives to reduce emissions?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: I am asking about TII's obligations in this regard in the broader context. Understanding that the provision to offer the 10% discount requires stopping the trucks to use a bonus card system is an outrageous proposition and it is not one that is in line either with the national planning framework, our environmental contracts or our climate change objectives. Is that not the case?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: That means they are gold-plated contracts. If it is not enforceable, it is rubbish to say there is a provision to give a 10% discount.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: They did not offer it.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: Mr. Masterson did not intervene. I am the person who negotiated on this issue. The IRHA developed a tag for the very objective of achieving the 10% discount for hauliers in order that they would not have to pass the cost on to the consumer. Mr. Masterson, in particular, was the roadblock to achieving that. He failed to give any direction to any of the operators to institute the 10%...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: That is what I am saying. The contractors are a law unto themselves. They were given a gold-plated contract. I appreciate what Mr. Walsh said about nobody------
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: I ask Mr. Masterson to let me finish.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: Mr. Masterson was the roadblock.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)
Verona Murphy: I said Mr. Masterson was the roadblock at the time, when I was president of the IRHA.
