Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Football Association of Ireland's Facility Investment Vision and Strategy, and Governance Issues: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: I am out of time. I appreciate that Mr. Barrett wishes to expand on his answer. I am sure very few observers looking on will believe there was a lack of knowledge from Mr. Hill in respect of this arrangement. Very few of them will believe there was not some effort to increase pay. It harks back to the old days. Mr. Hill said it himself in his statement. It harks back to the old days...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Football Association of Ireland's Facility Investment Vision and Strategy, and Governance Issues: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: Okay. I will move to Mr. Barrett. He is clearly a key figure in all this, as outlined by Ms Joyce. He was the first person to bring it to Ms Joyce's attention. Considering that this had not been done before, other than possibly for one other staff member, and it did not comply with the staff handbook, why did he come up with this idea? Was it a discussion between him and Mr. Hill to try...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Farm Costs (12 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: Not really.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Farm Costs (12 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: I will not shoot the messenger.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Farm Costs (12 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: Tonight, I raise an incredibly serious issue that has emerged over recent times. There are several essential farm items for which farmers can no longer reclaim or get a refund on VAT. This is a disaster for farmers across the length and breadth of Ireland. Farmers are trying to invest in their farms and their farms' efficiency and sustainability. They are putting multiples of thousands of...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Farm Costs (12 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister of State. I guess it does, but the concerns still remain. What I am most concerned with in the statement is the line that states "VAT incurred for other purposes, such as on the acquisition of equipment or machinery, does not come within the scope of the refund order." There were certain items of equipment, like what I mentioned earlier, such as meal bins and bulk...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Climate Change Negotiations (12 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: 20. To ask the Taoiseach if he will report on his attendance at COP28. [53276/23]

Ceisteanna - Questions: Climate Change Negotiations (12 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: COP28 has highlighted the level of resistance from oil and gas and companies and countries closely tied to oil and gas. There is an inherent resistance to a reduction in use of fossil fuels globally. We are seeing the scale of the battle we face in order to address that. We have to continue that fight in terms of international discussion. At home we need to ramp up efforts to wean...

Written Answers — Department of An Taoiseach: Economic Policy (12 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: 31. To ask the Taoiseach if he will report on the Government’s response to the annual recommendations of the National Competitiveness and Productivity Council, which was published by his Department on 29 November 2023. [54690/23]

Planning and Development Bill 2023: Second Stage (Resumed) (7 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister of State. My contribution, in the context of the number of years I have been in the Dáil, is one of my most important. It is one of the last opportunities for me as a TD for Cork South-West to finally sort out the slow, laborious planning process people have to face day in, day out, especially in the area of west Cork because although we are blessed with beauty, it...

Planning and Development Bill 2023: Second Stage (Resumed) (7 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: I will talk about the islands. We are trying to repopulate our islands. Again, west Cork has some of the most beautiful and stunning inhabited islands, including Cape Clear, Sherkin, Dursey and Bear islands, to name just a few, but there is an issue. We have an issue in populating our housing and there is a housing issue. We introduced Croí Cónaithe, and an enhanced rate for it,...

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government: Environmental Policy (7 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: 50. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government when Ireland’s new National Biodiversity Action Plan will be launched; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [54213/23]

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (6 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: I want to raise the issue of ward 2D in Cork University Hospital, CUH, which is the HSE's largest hospital. Ward 2D is a haematology and burns unit. It has beds, seven of which are for leukaemia patients. That is ten beds to serve the entire region of Cork, Kerry and Waterford, so capacity is the first problem. These are also some of the sickest patients in CUH. Unfortunately, ward 2D...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Safety, Online Disinformation and Media Literacy: Discussion (6 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: I thank the witnesses for attending to discuss this very serious issue. I join Deputy Munster in saying that it is an absolute disgrace that Twitter X has not agreed to participate in this meeting. All so-called social media giants have a role to play in curbing the spread of disinformation. We can talk about Garda numbers and presence all we want, and about strategy and being able to...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Safety, Online Disinformation and Media Literacy: Discussion (6 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: Would Mr. Ó Broin say Meta is getting most of it or only a small proportion?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Safety, Online Disinformation and Media Literacy: Discussion (6 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: In terms of trying to find a solution to this, Meta owns WhatsApp, and a number of weeks ago when this incident kicked off, we know and are all aware of what happened. I read the WhatsApp messages and heard the voice notes calling for immigrants to be killed. We have heard them. I am not sure if Mr. Ó Broin heard them but I certainly did. Would Mr. Ó Broin agree there was a...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Safety, Online Disinformation and Media Literacy: Discussion (6 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: However, by the time a user reports something like that, it has gone too far. The group is already on the street. They are out there and activated. Surely, we are going to have to think of another way to curb that type of messaging.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Safety, Online Disinformation and Media Literacy: Discussion (6 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: It is not enough.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Safety, Online Disinformation and Media Literacy: Discussion (6 Dec 2023)

Christopher O'Sullivan: It is not enough. That was an audio message, obviously. We heard about the image of the tank rolling into Dublin, which was again widely shared on WhatsApp. Now, that is an image. That is something visual. Surely, that type of thing can be stopped.
