Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: It is a very fair scheme. I smiled when I heard Senator Fitzgerald. She and Fine Gael are very precious regarding Deputy James Reilly. He held the country to ransom when he went out and——

Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: He bled the taxpayer dry.

Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: Fine Gael and Senator Fitzgerald are very precious regarding Deputy Reilly. In his role as president of the IMO, he bled the taxpayer dry.

Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: He bled the taxpayer dry in the interests of his own profession. The Opposition cannot have it every way. He cannot be the champion and they cannot be the champions behind him for the elderly. The Opposition needs to get real. He robbed the State and now he wants to be all things to all people. They cannot have it every way. Deputy Bernard Allen, on 29 November 2007, criticised the...

Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: It is from the Dáil record. I congratulate the IMO. I hope talks will come to fruition. It is a much more agreeable fee than that negotiated before. I would like to see the IPU come to the table and look at generic drugs. I wish the Minister well and look forward to having the deal done with the IPO and the IPU.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I ask the Deputy Leader to ask the Minister for Health and Children to come to the Chamber to have a debate on eating disorders. I was shocked to hear a discussion on a radio programme this morning by two experts in the field, who will hold a public meeting tonight, which is free of charge, on obesity. They said it is viewed almost as a norm as we have reached such high numbers and people...

Seanad: Mental Health Bill 2008: Second Stage (30 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I welcome the Minister and commend the Bill to the House. This is a short Bill but it is important legislation. It aims to validate 209 renewal orders which are in force under the Mental Health Act 2001 and to make lawful the detention of those patients. The need for the new Bill has arisen from High Court proceedings concerning a patient detained under section 15 of the 2001 Act. This...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: Senator Regan must be sorry to see it finish.

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: Senator Regan would be better off in the Four Courts.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I support the call of Opposition Members for a debate on medical cards for those over 70. Senator Buttimer is getting ready to say something but Senator, for once what I will say to you——

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I agree with Senator Buttimer that there was fear and confusion; there is no doubt about that. However, at 10 a.m. yesterday, that fear and confusion was lifted.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I disagree with Senator Buttimer's comment that Fine Gael is not playing politics with this. I believe it is by not informing the electorate of what was introduced at 10 a.m. yesterday when the Taoiseach spoke on national radio. Fine Gael is playing politics by bussing its supporters to Dublin today——

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I believe that is what Fine Gael is doing.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I usually respect what most colleagues in this House say and I am usually of the same opinion. Senator Alex White and Senator Norris spoke about what happened in St. Andrew's Church yesterday. I was not there but I watched the news last night and was horrified at the behaviour of a small percentage of those over 70. What example does that offer? What I saw was rudeness and bad manners.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: A Chathaoirligh, I am entitled——

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: That small group did not represent the people I represent in this House. I have received phone calls to tell me that. What would have happened if it had been a younger age group? The whole country would have been up in arms if that number of people had been allowed into a Catholic church to behave in such a manner.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I am not attacking the elderly; I am 100% with the elderly.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I am talking about a small group. I am as entitled as anyone else to air my opinion in this House.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I did not interrupt——

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Oct 2008)

Geraldine Feeney: I will put my question to the Leader. However, I will preface it by pointing out that there was no need for such rudeness and bad manners yesterday. When we have that debate I will make the point that my party, Fianna Fáil, is the natural party for the majority of the elderly in this country.
