- Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Nov 2003)
Mary O'Rourke: Senator Bannon mentioned health, security at ATMs and the development at Punchestown. That is a matter for the Minister for Agriculture and Food. I know he is only coming in to talk about decoupling, but I take it the Senator is against the facilities at Punchestown.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Nov 2003)
Mary O'Rourke: Senator Bradford seconded Senator Brian Hayes's motion in favour of a debate on the health services, as did several others. We will have the Estimates this week, so we will see what moneys are going to the health services, although I understand this does not solve the immediate difficulties with accident and emergency facilities. Senator Coghlan supported Senator Hayes and also supported...

- Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Nov 2003)
Mary O'Rourke: Senator Brian Hayes referred to the issue of the PRSAs as a dead duck. His call for a debate on the matter has been taken up by other speakers. He also raised the topic of Abbotstown and asked where it was although we know where it isâ
- Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Nov 2003)
Mary O'Rourke: The question "whither Abbotstown?" seems to ebb and flow like the tide. We read about it from time to time but we do not know what is the intention. It would be useful to have somebody in to discuss it. The Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism, Deputy O'Donoghue, will be back next week. We will approach him about the arts plan and we can also raise this matter. Senator Quinn mentioned that...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Nov 2003)
Mary O'Rourke: We will try to get the relevant Minister here. Senator Kett raised the financing of voluntary bodies and asked for a debate on disability which we have not had to date. We had a debate some time ago about child disability with the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Deputy Tim O'Malley. The Education for Persons with Disabilities Bill is currently going through the...

- Seanad: Order of Business. (5 Nov 2003)
Mary O'Rourke: Senator Brian Hayes raised the issue of electronic voting. Both Opposition parties have brought forward papers on the subject and have requested a debate. The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Cullen, would be interested in speaking in the House on the matter. He is not well at present, but I will ask him to come to the House for such a debate soon. The...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (5 Nov 2003)
Mary O'Rourke: The Senator may be sure of it. I recall a case a number of years ago with a particular presiding officer where 27 ballot papers went through unfranked. Although it did not affect that particular election, they were wasted votes. There was no record at all. I favour electronic voting and I hope it can be fully explained in the debate we will have here and that any fears will be laid to rest....
- Seanad: Order of Business. (5 Nov 2003)
Mary O'Rourke: Senator Terry raised the issue of crime levels. Yesterday, there were calls in this House, as there were in the other House, concerning action by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy McDowell, who took Private Notice Questions in the Dáil. I attended the launch of Senator O'Toole's book and the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform was still answering those...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (5 Nov 2003)
Mary O'Rourke: Only toads. I thought that it was slugs and snails as well. The Senator is in favour, as I am, of electronic voting. The Senator said they all had their day; they have had a fair day. The Senator asked whether the Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Deputy Parlon, could attend the House. He is on our list but the issue seems to have receded. However, we should ask him to attend...
- Seanad: National Development Plan Mid-Term Evaluation: Statements. (5 Nov 2003)
Mary O'Rourke: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Parlon, to the House. I was interested in what Senator Higgins said. He started by welcoming the plan and called it crisp, concise and challenging, which are all lovely alliterative words and made good listening. Where the Senator disagreed with the plan, it was not crisp, concise and challenging, but all sorts of other things. While the Senator is...
