An Bille um an gCeathrú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht 2014: An Dara Céim [Comhaltaí Príobháideacha] - Thirty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2014: Second Stage [Private Members] (8 May 2015)

Ruth Coppinger: The sum total of the debate seems to be business as usual in so far as the issue of abortion is concerned. The nod and wink policy will continue. Both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil speakers in the debate today have not referred to any of the issues raised by the proposers of the motion and by others on this side of the House. There was no mention of the 4,0000 women who leave this country...

Ruth Coppinger: I find it very ignorant that the Minister of State with responsibility for equality is not even listening to what I am saying and neither is the Minister for Health. I ask that they show a little bit of respect.

Ruth Coppinger: It is very disingenuous of the Minister to say that legislation for abortion exists and that we do not need this Bill. The Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act did not even facilitate the people it was meant to facilitate who were suicidal. That was very obvious last summer in the treatment of the most vulnerable migrant rape victim who was suicidal. She was deemed by doctors to need...

Ruth Coppinger: Tairgim: "Go léifear an Bille an Dara hUair anois." I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." I wish to share time with my colleague, Deputy Paul Murphy. I will speak for ten minutes and he will speak for five.

Ruth Coppinger: I formally propose the Thirty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2014. If adopted, following a referendum of the people, it would have the effect of deleting Article 40.3.3o, otherwise known as the eighth amendment, from the Constitution. This would allow the Dáil to then draft legislation, as it sees fit, to permit abortion in the State. The Bill was published last September...

Other Questions: Economic Policy (7 May 2015)

Ruth Coppinger: 9. To ask the Minister for Finance if any cost-benefit analysis was carried out by his Department in relation to the decision to split tax cuts and public spending increases 50:50 in the next budget, as announced in the spring economic statement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17576/15]

Other Questions: Economic Policy (7 May 2015)

Ruth Coppinger: Has a cost-benefit analysis been done by the Department of Finance regarding the Minister's decision to split tax cuts and public spending increases in a 50:50 ratio in the next budget, which is a change in the previous position of a 60:40 split? Has the Minister done an analysis of the impact this will have on our health and education sectors, on housing policy and on other significant...

Other Questions: Economic Policy (7 May 2015)

Ruth Coppinger: The spring economic statement is a continuation of the flawed policy of diminishing public expenditure and the public sector and shifting wealth away from workers. How will the Government get more teachers, nurses and so on by cutting public spending? I am in favour of a restoration of public spending, but I am also in favour of taxing the wealthy. In the previous answer, the Minister made...

Other Questions: Economic Policy (7 May 2015)

Ruth Coppinger: -----and other taxes on workers. Can the Minister clarify that? Is it not more likely that it will benefit the wealthy in society, just as the last budget did, rather than low-paid workers, many of whom are outside the tax net? We have record numbers of low paid workers in Ireland.

Other Questions: Economic Policy (7 May 2015)

Ruth Coppinger: With inflation, the increase in spending on public services that the Minister mentioned will actually amount to a decrease of 1% in real terms, according to the estimate of economists. Ireland would have to increase public investment by €2 billion to come up to the EU average. With regard to wealth, 10% of the top earners own 30% of the wealth in this country, while 1% owns 20%....

Other Questions: Economic Policy (7 May 2015)

Ruth Coppinger: Should the Minister not be considering that, given that Ireland is now known to be a tax haven? Will we ever see any sort of housing policy-----
