European Council: Statements (Resumed) (7 Mar 2012)

Eamon Gilmore: As always.

European Council: Statements (Resumed) (7 Mar 2012)

Eamon Gilmore: Deputy Ó Fearghaíl raised quite a number of issues. On the promissory notes and the point raised earlier by Deputy Ross, the Government was, prior to any discussion on the fiscal compact treaty, already engaged in a process of negotiation on those notes. That process is quite separate from that relating to the fiscal compact and we intend to ensure this remains the case. In the context of...

European Council: Statements (Resumed) (7 Mar 2012)

Eamon Gilmore: Deputy Mac Lochlainn asked what is plan B if the treaty is rejected. Frankly, the onus is on the Deputy's party to tell us the answer if the treaty is rejected because he and his colleagues are advocating its rejection. The Government is putting forward the treaty on a positive basis and we believe the treaty will contribute to stabilising the euro, which is in everybody's interest. People...

European Council: Statements (Resumed) (7 Mar 2012)

Eamon Gilmore: Hostility to the European Union makes for strange bedfellows indeed. What is provided for in the treaty will apply equally to all the states which ratify it but what is different is that unanimity is not required for the treaty to come into effect, unlike previous treaties. Ratification by 12 states is sufficient, with a timetable of 1 January next year.

European Council: Statements (Resumed) (7 Mar 2012)

Eamon Gilmore: The Government absolutely does not concede that, as Deputy Ross put it, there will almost inevitably be a second bailout. We do not accept that at all. The Government's strategy and objective is that we are in a programme and it will run for a period. Our intention is to exit that programme and return to the markets. All of the indications to date are that we will succeed in doing so. We...

Lá na Gaeilge: Statements (7 Mar 2012)

Eamon Gilmore: Is cúis ar leith áthais dom an seans seo a bheith agam mo thacaíocht do Sheachtain na Gaeilge a chur in iúl don Teach agus don phobal atá ag éisteacht linn. Is deas agus is cuí tréimhse ar leith a chur ar leataobh le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar an gné is suntasaí agus is ársa do chultúr na tíre seo: an Ghaeilge. Tacaím go hiomlán lena bhfuil ráite ag an Taoiseach maidir le...

Written Answers — Passport Applications: Passport Applications (6 Mar 2012)

Eamon Gilmore: The Passport Office has no record of an application from the person in question. She has since advised the Passport Office that she is not an Irish citizen and that she made an application for citizenship through naturalisation in June 2011. This is therefore a matter for the Minister for Justice and Equality.

Eamon Gilmore: The Government decided to proceed with Ireland's signature of the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights on 21 February 2012. Arrangements are now being made for signature, which will take place shortly. Ratification of the Optional Protocol is a separate step, which must be preceded by a thorough screening of the obligations to be assumed,...

Written Answers — Trade Embargoes: Trade Embargoes (6 Mar 2012)

Eamon Gilmore: Ireland's position on the United States' trade embargo of Cuba is long standing and well known. Ireland, and other EU member states, supports an annual draft resolution at the UN General Assembly introduced by Cuba rejecting the extraterritorial effects of the US embargo, most recently on 25 October 2011. We and our EU partners are not persuaded that the continued embargo on Cuba is...

The committee's most recent resolution was adopted on 21 June 2011. In this resolution, the...

The table sets out the visa allocation for 2012 and the available information on the number of visas approved in 2010 and 2011. In the case of Australia and New...

Leaders' Questions (1 Mar 2012)

Eamon Gilmore: The Government has a record of success in the renegotiation of the entire bailout arrangements and the deal done with the EU and the IMF. Despite the scepticism of some Members, we successfully negotiated significant reductions in the interest rate for the financial arrangements, which is worth €10 billion to the Irish people.

Leaders' Questions (1 Mar 2012)

Eamon Gilmore: We continue to be engaged in talks with the troika to explore possible ways to re-engineer the promissory notes and find a less expensive solution for the people by, for example, replacing them with other financial instruments with long maturity. The discussions are under way and we continue with that work. The Minister for Social Protection made it very clear in her interview that...
