Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Oct 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: If it were to be placed in the Oireachtas Library one would not know whether to put it in the fantasy section, the fiction section or the finance section. Sinn Féin is proposing an increase in tax on jobs and business and its members are becoming climate change deniers.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Oct 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: To be helpful to Senator Higgins, whom I did not interrupt, Sinn Féin is proposing €2.8 billion in new taxes and 18 new taxes. For example, in terms of inheritance tax it is proposing the imposition of an additional €3,240 on a person who inherits a four bedroom house. That is some record.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Oct 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Senator Norris made reference to the genetics disorder Bill. I look forward to working with him on it. Senator Humphreys has been very strong in his advocacy around the issue of breast feeding in terms of national breast feeding week and the fact that six out of ten babies are breast-fed. The Minister recently launched a campaign recognising that more resources need to be put in place. I...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Oct 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Senators Hopkins and Gallagher raised the issue of TidyTowns. I join with both Members in congratulating the overall victor of the TidyTowns competition, Glaslough. I also congratulate the 118 entrants and all who participate in TidyTowns, including the volunteers. As mentioned by Senators Hopkins and Gallagher, TidyTowns is not just about collecting litter, it is about biodiversity,...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Oct 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Senator Marie-Louise O'Donnell raised yet again the very important matter of home care in the community, independent living and our ageing population. I encourage all Members to read the report compiled by the Senator, as it offers a template or foundation for future policy initiatives for Governments to make, whatever their composition. We are living longer and we are trying to live at...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Health and Safety (26 Sep 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Health and safety in the workplace training has traditionally focused on physical safety but we need to develop a more robust training system for employees to help protect mental health in the workplace. Mental health care costs approximately €8.2 billion annually. The Mental Health Foundation's survey shows that more than 40% of employees are neglecting other aspects of their life...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Health and Safety (26 Sep 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: This issue does not come under the Minister of State's Department but I thank him for being here. I commend the Minister of State, Deputy Daly, on his work and productivity on the matter. The Minister of State's statement that there is no obligation on employers in the wider workplace to provide mental health training to their employees is a worry, notwithstanding the large amount of work...

Jerry Buttimer: I agree.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Sep 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank the 17 Members who contributed to the Order of Business. The Cathaoirleach's intervention in the context of defending Senator Craughwell, who is not here, was timely. I know that matters are a bit different this morning but I ask Members to reflect. First, I ask them to watch the contribution made by the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, MP, earlier. I know I can be...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Sep 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: The payment was tied up with the FÁS training scheme placement. In saying that, I have received correspondence on the matter. I met the parents of those who have been affected or who feel they have been affected and I met the individuals involved themselves. It is important to ensure that whatever is the intended consequence, it is not an "misconsequence". Despite what the Senator...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Sep 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: The contribution around disabilities and reclaiming the streets and pavements is an interesting one. We need to have a real conversation about this from a national perspective, a local government perspective and from the citizens' point of view, in how we see our streets and streetscapes. There is now a proliferation of street furniture, bikes, prams and buggies competing for space on...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Sep 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Senator Kieran O'Donnell referred to the issue of Shannon Airport and the importance of it having a European major hub. This is an important point. Obviously we are from competing counties, with regard to Cork and Shannon, but Senator O'Donnell made the point that aviation policy should be made irrespective of where one is from. Dublin has now become the overriding part of aviation policy,...

Jerry Buttimer: Senator Mullen made comments in the House yesterday about tolerance and respect of views in the context of a debate yesterday. Perhaps Senator Mullen might do the same, please.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Sep 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: I am merely articulating a view that irrespective of one's opinion or view, I do not believe a prayer vigil or a protest - whatever it is - should be held outside a maternity hospital, north, south, east or west.
